102 | Good Built Homes BUILDING Core values key for builder The bulk of building activity is around the Kaipara region and most work is concentrated around the residential sector. T T Sue Russell For Northland-based builder Joe Frearson, his business very much speaks to the heart of the matter in expressing who he is and what he believes in. Having qualified himself in the art and skill of construction and then spending seven years building in Perth. Joe determined that his own company’s culture would articulate his core values in meaningful ways for his clients and for his valued team. “The Core Values are who I am as a person. How I conduct myself and what matters most to me about is caring for my team, giving them a good working environment and the security of employment filters down through my team of foremen and my apprentices. That’s something I’m very proud of,” Joe says. Based in Dargaville, Good Built Homes employs a team of 10, along with Joe who is full-time organising work, engaging with clients, and ensuring the builds, go as smoothly as possible. When considering taking on more staff, Good Built Homes likes to hire staff who fit in well with the team, they must have good morals and values as each employee is a reflection of the company. Most of the team are whanau-based already, ranging from best friends, cousins, brothers, brothers-in-law, a nephew, and a niece. The bulk of building activity is around the Kaipara region and most work is concentrated around the residential sector. Most of the projects come by word of mouth as is often the case in smaller communities. Post the cyclone, the team were kept busy on a number of insurance claim projects and Joe admits to being a little concerned that these more damagingl weather patterns may become a common occurrence in the region. One branch of the company concentrates on roofing during the summer, one branch is dedicated to custom kitchens throughout the year and another is busy with multiple building projects. Having so much work on at any one time means that Joe is now full-time in the office. He says it’s stressful most times but it’s worth it. He gets a lot of positive feedback from clients and the community. He couldn’t be more proud of his team and acknowledges them all for their hard work. The company operates from a yard in Dargaville. Good Built Homes undertake a lot of work for local Iwi. He’s pleased with the many initiatives for employment that Iwi are engaging in as he sees the positive benefits for the entire region. Joe believes supporting future generations to gain meaningful employment and hopefully, a trade will give them a purpose and life direction that will definitely be beneficial for not only them but their community “They are really trying to cater for our young people.” Joe has also engaged the services of a business consultant ‘Oxygen8 Building’, to support his strategic focus. The decision to seek that support, he says, has definitely been the right one to make. “I think for people starting out and especially when you grow quite quickly, you don’t have the time in those early days to be thinking more long-term. Susan Cooney of Oxygen8 has helped me to think about things beyond the day-to-day, which is adding strength and resilience to my business.” Northland Electrical Solutions C&C Contract Electrical Residential, Industrial and Commercial Electrical Solutions...
