108 | Moving with the market The team enjoys a day out at the races. BUILDING Turton Builders & Mayall Properties T T Kelly Deeks Premium Hamilton building and development firm Turton Builders is moving with the changing demands of the market, and since new homes are currently a tough sell, the company has decided to go ahead and renovate the large old home on a section which was initially earmarked for development, rather than fill it with multiple new homes. “The new homes market is hard going at the moment and it really doesn’t help with our workflow,” says Turton Builders co-director Brad Turton. “So we’ve changed tactics a bit. Instead of building four smaller homes, we’re giving this existing home a big birthday makeover with a new roof and new cladding, gutting the inside and turning it into a modern, high-end home.” Turton Builders is a family business founded by Bruce and Bronwyn Turton in 1997. Specialising in residential homes, developments, renovations, and light commercial work, Turton Builders has a varied portfolio and a team experienced in delivering high quality finished projects, no matter the scale. Bruce is a skilled tradesman with more than 40 years’ experience in the construction industry. Bruce and Bronwyn’s son Brad joined the business 15 years ago and together he and Bruce offer a hands-on approach, both building and project managing onsite with their team. Together, they oversee a small but skilled and passionate team of five builders. “Our clients value our personalised business approach which delivers an exceptional customer experience alongside top quality craftmanship,” Brad says. “The industry is evolving all the time so our experience combined means we bring our different outlooks, different perceptions, and different strengths to every project and we can tackle things efficiently.” Loyalty and accountability are key values of Turton Builders for both clients and subcontractors and Brad says these have helped to build up a team of regular subcontractors who provide high quality results as well as a great team environment for everyone to work in. A recently completed commercial project on Anglesea Street in Hamilton Central saw Turton Builders constructing an office building for a return client with Turton Builders having already built their new family home some years ago. This build was commenced at the end of 2022, right in the height of the post-Covid construction boom when material shortages were coming right but the labour market continued to be tight. Despite the challenges, Brad says all of the subcontractors working at Anglesea Street were great contributors to its successful outcome. One of the highlights on this job was getting the exterior finished with its brick and Equitone fibre cement panels. Equitone is a through-coloured facade material which shows the raw, untreated texture of its fibre cement base material and can be attached without fixings. It was a new product for Turton Builders to work with, and Brad says it has come up looking great. Turton Builders plans to continue to deliver whatever the market is looking for and whatever its clients want, renovations or new homes, large projects or small.
