| 33 Adding electrical expertise Guild & Spence Electrical is has been servicing the electrical requirements of the Bay of Plenty for over 40 years and is the largest locally owned company in the region. Guild & Spence cover all facets of the electrical trade from commercial, industrial and residential, to servicing the agricultural sector, and electrical networks. They support customers in need of heat pump installation and servicing, an emergency electrician or a commercial client that requires large-scale electrical services. Adding value to Guild & Spence’s services since 2017 is registered electrical engineer and electrician Daniel Maathuis. An enthusiastic leader of the commercial design team, Dan offers high-level electrical design and project management for clients. He understands the practical components of a job and will design a concept that meets the client’s needs and budget. “By being involved with a client’s plans from concept stage we can have input into the architect’s design and engage with the main contractors to meet the client’s electrical needs. Commercial properties can have very complex electrical needs and they need to be addressed at the planning stage,” says Dan. “Architects are not electrical engineers and I’m able to tell them if they’ve misunderstood something. We’re adding expertise in commercial Lighting, heating and any specific industrial or commercial needs. Basically, everything electrical.” “The design team is really focused on customer service and compliance from the initial concept plan to a build’s completion,” he says. Dan has been working closely with Lett’s Construction in recent years to provide electrical designs for multiple projects, notably a set of six new hangers on De Havilland Way, near Tauranga Airport, with 10 more hangers in the pipeline. “I am looking forward to seeing these hangers being constructed as they will have a range of uses from domestic dwellings to plane storage and a flying school. It’s been great being involved from the concept stage to get this near construction. We’ve been working alongside Letts to design everything from the network supply, the loading requirements, and the fitout. It’s been a great project and I’m sure it will be executed to an extremely high standard from our frontline workers,” says Dan. Outside of business hours, Dan brings his cricketing skills to the fore and is involved with local cricket club, the Otumoetai Cadets.
