T T to page 40 In a significant achievement, the Northern Corridor Improvements (NCI) Alliance has been honoured with the Auckland region Civil Contractors New Zealand award for projects exceeding $50 million. The accolade recognised the Alliance’s outstanding work on the $750 million Northern Corridor Improvements Project, commissioned by Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency. Located in Albany, Auckland, the ambitious project is a pivotal component of the primary route connecting Auckland and Northland and serving as the concluding link in the 48-kilometre Western Ring Route. Hamish Matthews, the Alliance Project Manager, highlights the collaborative efforts of the NCI Alliance, comprising Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, Fulton Hogan, HEB Construction, WSP, and Jacobs, in partnership with mana whenua. “The success of the project is attributed to its emphasis on people development, meticulous planning, a customer-centric approach and the adept handling of additional scope, ensuring the project’s timely completion,” he says. The expansive project scope encompassed the widening of four kilometres of the SH1 motorway in both northbound and southbound directions, as well as the upgrading of two kilometres of SH18 to full motorway standard, including geometric improvements. These improvements are connected by a new interchange, complete with an underpass, facilitating a direct motorway connection between SH1 and SH18. Additionally, the project involved extending the dedicated Northern Busway by nearly five kilometres, with key features such as the expansion of the Constellation Bus Station and direct connection to Albany Bus Station. The realignment of a new highway section necessitated the relocation of three major sporting facilities: the National Hockey Stadium for North Harbour Hockey, Wainoni Pony Club and Riding for the Disabled, and North Harbour BMX. “The success of the project is attributed to its emphasis on people development, meticulous planning, a customercentric approach and the adept handling of additional scope, ensuring the project’s timely completion.” Mackenzie Transport specialises in crane hire, overwidth and over-dimensional loads, pick-up and delivery with mobile Hiab truck.
