Notably, the project featured the construction of the award-winning Tirohanga Whānui combined walking, cycling, and watermain bridge, a collaborative effort with Watercare and Auckland Transport. Envisioned during the tender phase, Hamish emphasises the Alliance’s commitment to minimising disruption to road users. “The planning process, initiated during the tendering phase, focused on designing temporary traffic management to minimise disruption, with construction methodologies tailored accordingly. Despite facing challenges such as significant additional scope, an historic drought, record flood and the COVID-19 pandemic, the team executed the project seamlessly, accessing the work site primarily from local roads or motorway ramps and maintaining a 100 km/h speed limit on SH1 for the majority of the construction period.” Hamish says that becoming a high performing team as quickly as possible was crucial to delivering the project. The Alliance formed an environment that offered opportunities to grow and learn as a team and for individuals at all levels to leverage the valuable experience of working on a large roading infrastructure project. “This began with selecting the right people and establishing how everyone needed to work together and what success looked like,” he says. Highlighting the collaborative spirit, Hamish notes the involvement of third parties such as Auckland Transport, Transpower, Watercare, Vector, North Harbour Hockey, Wainoni Pony Club, Riding for the Disabled, and North Harbour BMX, despite the absence of a direct contractual connection. “Strong relationships with these parties were forged for the collective benefit of the project and the wider Auckland community. The partnership with mana whenua, established early in the project, is evident in the urban design narrative and the mahi toi artwork embedded in various structures on-site,” he says. A cornerstone of the project’s success was the meticulous development and adherence to a comprehensive program, with continuous monitoring and adjustment as the works progressed. The NCI Alliance consistently analysed progress, identifying opportunities or threats at the earliest stages. The project’s ultimate triumph lay in maintaining the smooth flow of 170,000 vehicles through the site daily. A testament to the project’s success, the final component - the SH1 shared user path - was opened to the public in April 2023, achieving Practical Completion in June 2023, two weeks ahead of the Target Completion Date. Hamish Matthews acknowledges the exceptional achievement considering the site’s challenges, the incorporation of significant additional scope during construction, and external factors beyond the team’s control. “Notably, despite the potential for significant disruption inherent in constructing such a massive project in a complex brownfield environment, the NCI Alliance is pleased to have delivered the project with minimal disruption to road and bus users and our neighbours. “The team’s dedication to cultivating a performance-oriented culture, coupled with individual and team development, is reflected in high satisfaction scores from staff surveys conducted throughout the project. “The final survey in late 2022 boasted an 85% participation rate, with 100% of staff affirming that NCI was a great place to work. “After all, none of this stuff happens without good people, working together as a team.” OUR SERVICES: • Fertilisation • Mulching & Matting • Root Barrier Installation PHONE 021 766 695 EMAIL v.roach.chelsea@xtra.co.nz Chelsea Landscapes begun its journey over 37 years ago in Tauranga.
