House of the Year Awards: Glen Armstrong Builders BUILDING Receiving a regional gold award at this year’s Waikato Master Builders House of the Year Award was the icing on the cake for Te Aroha-based Glen Armstrong and his team of builders. The ‘Altus Window Systems’ New Home $750k - $1million four bedroom home is set in a semi-rural situation. Called ‘Come on Home’, in the competition, the 270sqm home contains two living rooms, a separate office, two bathrooms, a separate laundry and boasts loads of storage. Considerable thought was given in the home’s design to getting the proportions just right and the open plan floor-plan is well suited to family engagement. “There are some great design features in this home, which we really enjoyed building, including the detailing around the box corners and cladding that is especially suited to the homes look and feel,” says Glen. The large kitchen has been designed to be a focal gathering point with a woodburner surrounded by a natural stone surround to give it flair, providing the comfort of heating and a place for family to gather. Outside there are several deck options, with the house positioned on the site to capture the movement of the sun. Views of the Kaimai Ranges add visual interest when outside. Glen has operated his building business for nine years now, focusing mainly on residential with a little bit of light commercial. It’s a small tight-knit business with Glen and four others. “I’m very active on the tools which is the way I like it and I do all the admin side and planning in the evenings. We’re comfortably busy and haven’t really noticed a drop. Our lead times though have come back to 12 months,” Glen says. When Business North caught up with Glen toward the end of October he had just handed over the keys to another home and was commencing work on a Coromandel home, a Ngatea home along with a substantial renovation. Asked about renovation work as opposed to building from brand new Glen says it’s a great learning situation. “Everything is plan as you go with renovations and you learn a lot more around problem solving. I like the challenges that come and it’s great for those new to their building career to experience.” Though actively on the tools, Glen also takes care of the project management on all sites the team are working on. He also holds the ‘Clever Living Homes’ Waikato franchise, promoting affordable homes through Bunnings. “We are starting to build a show-home in Te Aroha at our depot. It will be transportable and will show-case just what can be achieved through smart building, excellent design and great quality products.” When asked about future plans Glen says he’s pleased with where the business is at 9 years on and conscious of the challenges of recent years, brought on by COVID and consequent supply and cost issues, he will take careful steps forward. “This is a great area to build in, with rural and town work. We’re well positioned to offer our building services across a large area where all sorts of development situations are occurring, especially as small rural blocks are subdivided.” M O R R I N S V I L L E We have been helping with flooring choices in our Community for over 80 years – pop in or give the team a call! 07 889 6421 49 Lorne Street, Morinsville 3300 With your enquiry about a quote or a service.
