72 | BUILDING House of the Year Awards: Taylor Construction T T Kelly Deeks High-end homes to social housing Fresh from the Registered Master Builders House of the Year 2023 Top 100, Auckland’s Taylor Construction is now applying its high standards of workmanship to a 57-unit social housing development, the biggest yet for this bespoke construction team. Taylor Construction had two winning projects in this year’s House of the Year competition, their Builders’ Own Home earning a Silver Award and an exceptional rural dwelling called ‘Beauty and the Barn’ taking out a Gold Award as well as a Top 100. Taylor Construction growth and relationships manager Ben Irons says this project is being renamed to ‘Pastural Perfection’ for the Top 100 publication, but it should have been called ‘No Compromise in the Country’, due to the owner sticking to their vision despite the challenges to achieving it and also being tempted away from it. “We may not be building Beauty and the Barn, but we’re building homes for people in need.” This home was built during materials shortages and the absolute hallmark of its main room are the 19 Belgian railway sleepers which, as wooden ceiling trusses, give this contemporary home a real country feel. It’s not only these beautiful sleepers that make this living area pop. There is a sliding barn door in the kitchen leading to the scullery, a 2.7m wall of South Island schist separating the front door from the living space, and the whole kitchen, dining, and living space is brought together with polished concrete floors. Taylor Construction has a strong background and portfolio full of high end residential projects and is now getting some real traction in the social housing space as well, as it applies the same level of workmanship in that space. Taylor Construction has developed exacting processes to roll-out efficient, high-volume builds, and to tailor each project to individual requirements. The company culture of communication and expertise ensures high-volume builds are delivered to the same standards expected from bespoke single projects and unlike large franchises who embark on high-volume projects, Taylor Construction is still very much a family-run business, so its clients get a handson approach to their project. Last year Taylor Construction built 20 units on a 3000sqm site at Papatoetoe in partnership with a private developer client and a social housing provider. The high volume site featured a range of buildings including terraced homes, walk ups, and duplexes. “We were really proud of the timescale and quality achieved on that project,” Ben says. Taylor Construction’s latest social housing project is its largest yet, with another 57 units now under construction at Papatoetoe. “There is no slowing down on social housing,” Ben says. “This is great work for a building company with a team that loves doing Top 100 projects, and we’re going to continue to showcase our workmanship for our developer clients and for social housing providers. “We may not be building Beauty and the Barn, but we’re building homes for people in need. We come from a high level of workmanship and we’ve developed a level of efficiency from doing the hard yards with these high end homes. We’re bringing all of that through to some really well-finished social housing.” Leading supplier of ‘Everything Plumbing & Bathroom’ Auckland wide for over 55 years!
