House of the Year Awards: Stroud Homes - Bay of Plenty T T Kelly Deeks BUILDING When Stroud Homes Bay of Plenty entered the 2023 Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition as a benchmarking exercise, owners Shane and Lisa McMah had a wonderful surprise on the night winning the Volume/Group Housing New Home up to $500,000 category Gold Award, before being completely floored with the regional gold award, for a unique and complex build with a special connection to its site. Shane and Lisa entered a home whose distinctive design and challenging site made for a great story for the House of the Year competition, and a great result for their clients. The design of this home is a modification of one of Stroud Homes’ existing plans which suited the owners’ requirement for three large bedrooms and office, and an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living zone that extended to an outdoor entertainment area. A wonderfully cost-effective rectangular shape, the tricky part was making the floorplan work on the sloped site and within the tight budget. “This is a large section that slopes up and the house is halfway up the slope,” Shane says. “None of the house is on the ground, and we had to put scaffolding up just to put the foundations in which is quite unusual.” This 141sqm home has plenty of wow factor from the outside-in. Clad in eye-popping Shadowclad timber, the front facade and entryway with their gable-end roofline and clad post give a seamless look from the start. On the inside, one whole corner of the living space opens up with a pillarless ranch slider to an expansive deck, scenery, and sun. Shane says the pillarless slider is typical of the type of features that bring that resort style to Stroud Homes’ designs. “We are into affordable luxury and we have a range of options for our clients to explore to make their homes look and feel special.” One of the big lessons for Shane and the team to take away from this award winning build was how sharp processes needed to be when dealing with an atypical element like the large structural subfloor. Stroud Homes Bay of Plenty was building this home during the materials shortage so up-to-the-minute communication with trades and the client was essential to keep everyone on the same page. “Communication is key and it’s something Lisa and I implement on all our projects, and pride ourselves on.” Stroud Homes Bay of Plenty now has its sights set on getting to the nationals in the House of the Year competition for 2024 and has another amazing home lined up to enter. Now under construction at Waihi Beach, this holiday home is again based on an existing Stroud Homes design, and has fast become the team’s most favourite project to date. “When you drive up to it, you get that big wow factor,” Shane says. “Our clients are fantastic, and every time they come to site all they can say is ‘wow’.” This home has a great story behind it too for competition judges to immerse themselves in. While under planning, the owner passed away. It was his dream to have the best house on the street and when his family told Shane and Lisa they still wanted to go ahead, Shane says they jumped at the chance to bring his dream to life with his family. Shane has high hopes for the successful completion of this home and also for next year’s House of the Year competition. “We love this home so much and we’ve put so much hard work into it.
