BUILDING Attention to detail and clever use of materials made a Mount Maunganui house a standout for Vaughan Wilson Builders. The home picked up a gold award at the Bay of Plenty House of the year Awards in the new home $750,000 - $1 million category this year. The clients wanted to build their dream home - quite the responsibility. So the old house was demolished, the concrete slab was extended and the team stepped up and built this bespoke 3 bedroom, architecturally designed home. Halfway through the build it became clear it was something special with good simple design brought together with attention to detail evident everywhere. And so, they entered it in the House of the Year awards. It was the first time the company had entered. “We just thought, it was about time.” Their work was recognized with a spot in the Master Builders House of the Year National Top 100. The team was elated to have their work on the project recognised, he said. The design by architectural designer Peter Lockhead made the house a standout. The clever use of materials, cedar, bagged brick and aluminum with their junctions brought the design together nicely. This allowed the team to showcase their craftsmanship. Its efficient design with bright and breezy features makes the small footprint feel spacious and much larger than its 180sqm. Particularly upstairs with its high ceilings. It hadn’t been all smooth sailing getting the job done. There was a gib-board shortage right in the middle of the build, so elephant board was brought in as a replacement. There had also been a shortage of cedar at the time. “We on-bought the cedar and the client stored it”. This would see a considerable saving for the clients as the price of cedar doubled in that time. Vaughan said times were tricky for the industry in the current economic climate. “It’s nervous times at the moment. Mortgage rates have risen and the industry has had a bit of a slowdown. I think people were waiting for the election result to make decisions for next year, only time will tell now” However, he did not believe the lull would last. “I’m sure it will bounce back.” The company has been around for 26 years, mainly specializing in bespoke residential alterations and new builds. “We have navigated our way through good times and bad, there would be a way through this slump, I’ve been really lucky in the past to have big projects on through these down turns.” Vaughan said. He would not hesitate to enter House of the Year awards again having enjoyed the process.
