88 | Small team big on quality The architecturally designed home makes full use of the sun as it tracks around the home, bringing light and warmth into the living spaces. Breckon Builders T T Sue Russell BUILDING Sean Breckon and the team of Breckon Builders in Whangarei, Northland offer their new build and renovation services throughout the region. It’s a small business with three other team members, along with Sean actively on the tools. Sean says he’s big on maintaining standards, working transparently with clients and delivering high quality building and project management standards. As Certified Builders, Breckon Builders meet the standards required of members of that organisation, something Sean says is great for his clients because they know they are going to get the best possible workmanship no matter how big or small the project might be. “That’s one thing I’m really clear on with the team. Our reputation is second to none and every build reflects our passion for the craftsmanship that sits behind great construction.” The areas Breckon Builders cover are Maunu, Maungatapere, Whangarei, Dargaville, Managwhai, Kawakawa and Bream Bay (Ruakaka/Waipu). Sean says this geography gives plenty of scope for variety of work and situation. Through the COVID years, work wasn’t significantly impacted. “Actually back then due to low interest rates we got busier. I’ve also noticed an influx of people from Auckland choosing to slow down and move up north.” Asked if there are any challenges facing the business and sector generally Sean says the fact that finding quality tradesmen who you can trust to leave a job too, places stresses on the business growing. “There are, sadly, a lot of rubbish tradesmen out there. It is so busy that unfortunately those doing sub-standard work are still finding jobs to do.” At the end of 2023, Breckon Builders has four projects on the go; from new homes, some insurance reinstatements to building a poll shed in a rural situation. “Our reputation is second to none and every build reflects our passion for the craftsmanship that sits behind great construction.” He employs one apprentice through Te Pukenga and he’s pleased with how this organisation delivers learning. “I wasn’t actually that happy with BCITO. With Te Pukenga, apprentices attend classes on site once a month, keeping up with necessary book work. I think my apprentice is supported well as they keep a close eye on his progress through visits and class attendance.” When Business North spoke with Sean mid-November he said the team had been working on a 290m2 residential project in Kauri, which was near completion stage. The architecturally designed home makes full use of the sun as it tracks around the home, bringing light and warmth into the living spaces. Ahead, after a good break over Christmas/ New Year, there is a good amount of work to return to. “We’re still pricing work with projects in the pipe-line. Certainly I’m not booked in with projects as far out as I was a year or so ago, but there’s enough to keep the team productively engaged.” And with things a little slower now than they have been Sean says there’s even more reason to keep building standards consistently high. “I think its really important to produce excellent craftsmanship because in slower times people still notice the quality of work you’re producing and this is where future work comes from.” Asked about the longer term future, Sean says he would like to take on more staff but will do this when market conditions allow. This, he says, will allow him to free up a little more time to work on the business more, rather than in it. “It’s going well at this time, but I can see that this will be a necessary step in the future to grow positively.” • Septic Tank Systems • House Connections • Stormwater Drains • Farm Drainage • Earthworks and Landscaping • 3 Tonne Digger • 2.5, 3, 5 & 13 Tonne Digger Hire • 4 wheeler tip truck • 6 wheeler tip truck • 8 wheeler tip truck and drill hire McMILLAN ELECTRICAL STEVEN 022 544 1238 or 09 393 1051 mcmillanelectrical@outlook.com For all your commercial, rural and residential needs 021 589 219 | office@claytonarchitecture.co.nz
