Hewitt Builders T T Kelly Deeks “Kerikeri is a small area, and once you’ve got a good reputation you don’t need to look around too much for work.” BUILDING With a huge range of construction and project management experience gained over the past two decades, Shayne Hewitt of Hewitt Builders in Kerikeri has been providing comprehensive building packages on a variety of projects for happy clients all over town. “What I really care about is going above and beyond to make sure my clients get what they want,” he says. “We make sure our work is done right, and we don’t cut corners. I always believe in making sure people get value for money, and a lot of the work I do is charged on an hourly rate so my clients get what they pay for.” Completing his apprenticeship in 2005, Shayne carried on with his employer and worked on high-end residential projects, building huge, $15 million baches. “The biggest one we did had 3000sqm of tiles, with the main house being 1270sqm with a master suite bigger than the house I live in now,” Shayne says. Shayne spent five years building three new homes at the billionaires’ playground, Mataka Station, a Bay of Islands farm and conservation estate with 30 home sites. Shayne was recognised for his project-management talent, and was soon promoted to foreman as his boss took a step back. When the GFC hit in 2008, the workload disappeared and Shayne seized the opportunity to take six months off. When he returned to work he was asked back to Kerikeri’s event venue, the Turner Centre, which he had originally worked on in 2005 as an apprentice. This time, Hewitt Builders was charged with extending the facility, and now the company looks after the building’s repairs and maintenance, with Shayne knowing the building inside out. Up next was a new challenge for Shayne and Hewitt Builders. They started building at the newly established luxury retirement village in Kerikeri, Quail Ridge Country Club, and ended up staying for nearly eight years. “By the time I left, there were 86 houses completed. I went from building on the tools to moving into the office and working on the design and layout of the village. “I learned to draw on CAD and started managing the budgets, learning a lot about the financial side of business. Quail Ridge isn’t a standard retirement village; the homes in there are quite large. The smallest was 140sqm and the largest was 340sqm. When Covid hit, sales again dried up overnight, so Shayne got back on the tools and found himself an apprentice to build a home for a family friend. “Kerikeri is a small area, and once you’ve got a good reputation you don’t need to look around too much for work. “Now isn’t the time to grow, so we are taking on the smaller projects and doing them well.” Hewitt Builders has been a member of the certified builders for the past 13 years.
