BUILDING Phillip Holland proudly admits that PJ Builders, based in Whitianga, has had oodles of work of late, bucking the trend of many builders. Phill established PJ Builders nine years ago, and was based originally in Hamilton. Today, it is involved in some major projects working for what Phill describes as excellent clients, including Hopper Developments. “We’re very fortunate to have ongoing work with Hoppers. They are a real positive company and very supportive of seeing real growth in this district,” he says. Currently, that work includes the construction of five duplexes and a quadplex at stage one of The Moorings retirement village, one of Hoppers’ flagship waters-edge developments. “We’re full swing into stage one. The duplexes are 280sqm each, and depending on how the market responds to these properties there’s every possibility we’ll have ongoing work extending many years into the future. It speaks to the quality of our relationship, one that I value very much.” Along with this, Phill and the team of 18 builders he employs have two significant private residential projects; a beach-house for one client and a development for a client entering the house-and-land package sector. These days, Phill spends the bulk of his time engaging with potential new clients around their builds, visiting sites and keeping his finger on the pulse of the day-to-day operation. He says he is grateful for the quality of the team, some of whom have had many years’ experience across a range of construction forms. “I’m actually really pleased with our place in the market here. We’ve doubled in size in the last six months. While we’re certainly not the only builder working at scale, we have considerable ongoing work ahead and that’s really encouraging.” Phill says Whitianga is a region that’s in a very positive situation, with people even moving from the south to enjoy all the region has to offer. These days he concentrates on Whitianga and surrounds for his projects, and says the move up north was a positive one. “This is a great region to operate in and I’m pleased I made the move to consolidate up here.” Another project, closer to his heart, is completing a development he and his dad, Mark Holland, started. The 18-section subdivision on Centennial Hill means a great deal to Phill, after his father passed away 18 months ago. “Dad has undertaken subdivision projects for some time and this was something we were doing together. Now he’s not with us, I’m determined to see the project through to fruition. There’s a lot to learn regarding land development work and I hope it is something I may continue to undertake into the future.” Phill is adamant, his success comes down to doing the basics right, starting with open communication. “I have an open-book building policy, so my clients can see exactly what the costs of their build are and I maintain ongoing communication through a build. Any questions they have I can answer immediately and if any issues come up with a build, they are quickly resolved.” Proudly supporting PJ BuildersWhitianga • Tiling Installation • Waterproo ng • Sealing • Grouting • Tile Removal &Replacement 022 417 4911 hello@coromandeltiling.com Willis Electrical Ltd Electrical installations and maintenance Phone: 07 866 2413 Mobile: 027 404 8941 E: paul@williselectrical.co.nz W: www.williselectrical.co.nz Paul Willis Registered Electrician DOMESTIC | COMMERCIAL | INDUSTRIAL
