| 115 Symphony Construction BUILDING Striking all the right notes Symphony Construction’s owners Toyah and Reagan Langeveld and crew are thrilled with the exceptional result. T T Kim Newth Waikato-based Symphony Construction has made an impressive debut at this year’s Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition with their Gold-winning entry not only taking out its regional category (New Home $750,000 to $1 million) but also winning a Top 100 place as one of New Zealand’s best new homes. Symphony Construction’s owners Toyah and Reagan Langeveld are thrilled with the exceptional result. “We were hoping for Silver, so to get a Gold award was amazing,” says Reagan. “To see our name then come up as a category winner as well was pretty special for us and our team.” Reagan, who grew up on a farm near Thames, credits his high school woodwork teacher for inspiring his building career. After leaving school, he completed an apprenticeship with a Thames-based builder before moving to Hamilton. He has considerable experience in both renovations and new-home projects. Since founding Symphony Construction in 2019, Reagan has driven the business forward and today leads a hard-working team of four. Reagan enjoys guiding and teaching their apprentices, working with them on site. “We take pride in the quality staff we produce,” says Toyah, who manages the running of the business day to day. “Everyone gets on well together here – they’re excited to come to work and build these amazing homes.” Their Top 100 winning home is a showcase of elegance and comfort, with the build itself very efficiently completed in just six months from frames up to handover in mid-December 2023. “Reagan’s meticulous attention to detail and his ability to run a really tight ship, plus being on site and having an amazing relationship with the subcontractors is what enabled this home to come together so quickly,” Toyah says. A fusion of country boho and contemporary cool, this award-winning 167sqm in Mātangi was a labour of love for the team, who worked closely with the client to achieve her vision. Clad in shiplap cedar and weatherboards, the three-bedroom home exudes a warm welcome that starts with the kwila boardwalk and entrance portico. The interior is light and sleek with practical inclusions like an entry mudroom with its own macrocarpa bench. Here, a large cupboard and the walls are painted a tasteful sage selected by the client, a bespoke colour theme that is repeated throughout the property. The client lovingly designed the detailed kitchen to serve as the hub of the house. There is volume aplenty in the open-plan living area that has a 4.5-metre-high cathedral ceiling – a crane was needed to lift the frames into place. Three sets of sliders connect indoor living with the decks, portico and established garden beyond. Bathrooms are beautifully tiled and impeccably finished. Many materials in this home, including the bricks for the fireplace, were recycled from a family home in Auckland that was close to the heart of the client. Macrocarpa in the bedrooms and bathrooms came from the same source. This meticulous build honours that family legacy. The client loves her new home and also chose Symphony Construction to completely renovate a cottage on the same property.
