REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT 2024 CCNZ Awards: Northern Express Group Located at the Pukerito intersection at Warkworth, the mahi toi features two elements — a 4m carved pou whenua, and a stainless steel Pouākai (giant extinct eagle). The mahi toi is a tribute to Tainui ancestress, Reipae. Reipae and her sister, Reitū, travelled on the back of a large pouākai on their journey from Waikato to Whangārei. Along the way they rested in the area later known as Tohitohi o Reipae (Dome Valley). At the Pūhoi off ramp, sits He Tohu Maumahara. The toki and saw reference the two main tools used by Māori and Bohemian settlers to construct dwellings. The final two mahi toi artworks were installed in October 2024. The Waharoa/gateway features four pou towering alongside Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth providing a welcome and farewell to travellers as they enter or exit the Johnstones Hill tunnels. The Poupou represent rangatira with connections to the area welcoming travellers on to the motorway. Tapuwae o Kahumatamomoe Bridge panels adorn the bridge joining Moir Hill Road and are visible to north and southbound travellers along the central part of the motorway. The panels highlight the two awa catchments and the connections and links between Ngāti Manuhiri and the Ngāti Whātua tribes in the surrounding area, shown through the manaia design.
