T Tto page 28 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Winning the GIB Under $10 Million Project Award at the NZ Building People Awards 2024 was a surreal moment for Savory Construction’s project manager, Kierran Tuhi, who led the fit-out project for the NZ Blood Service’s (NZBS) new facility in Highbrook. The awards celebrate people in the building and construction industry doing great things, recognising people at all stages, places and scales – from inspiring Next Gen already making a difference to those working in major projects on site and behind the scenes. “Project managers from large and wellknown companies with very significant projects were up for this award, and that put my success into perspective,” says Kierran. “Successfully representing Savory Construction was pretty cool, and to be acknowledged that we were working in that domain, too. Being successful is an affirmation of your own skill-set, working with people to get the best results, and sound decision making.” In submitting the award nomination, Savory Construction’s senior leadership team said: “Kierran excelled in the New Zealand Blood Service’s Highbrook fit-out project by effectively managing the programme, cost, and quality aspects, despite complex challenges along the way. As project manager, he implemented solutions to maintain project timelines and quality standards while adhering to budget constraints. His leadership ensured that the team remained focused and motivated, overcoming obstacles with proactive problem-solving and clear communication. “Kierran’s calm, holistic approach and ability to earn the respect and trust of everyone around him exemplify the qualities of a distinguished project leader. He excelled in building strong relationships, advancing design with buildability in mind, and managing a complex web of stakeholders, designers, and engineers. Additionally, he adeptly navigated changes in government regulations and met stringent facility certification requirements through meticulous attention to detail.” Kierran’s introduction to the construction industry commenced when he was a 15 yearold working on building sites during school holidays. That continued right through until he had completed a degree in civil engineering, majoring in structures. After working for six years as a structural engineering consultant, Kierran moved into main contracting where, over a six year period, he progressed from site engineer to project management. He has been part of the Savory Construction project management team for the last 18 months. “My passion and drive stems from curiosity about how the world works and how to put it all together, and team dynamics. Being in a role where I can drive the team, you realise that people have certain skill-sets and making the most out of those skill-sets benefits everybody. Looking to the future, I want to get to the point where I have a really good understanding of how construction works, a well-rounded overview of the people involved, the decision- making processes, why we do what we do and how we do it.” Commercial Flooring supply and Installation Vinyl Flooring | Polished Concrete Carpet Tiles | Broadloom White Rock sales@prescott ooring.co.nz | www.prescott ooringnz.com
