Sanitarium T T Bernadette Cooney REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Sanitarium has been named New Zealand’s most trusted breakfast food brand for the 14th consecutive year, a remarkable achievement for a brand with a 123-year history across Kiwi breakfast tables. This honour solidifies the brand’s enduring presence in our households with its iconic products like Weet-Bix™, UP&;GO™, Marmite™, and So Good™ plant milks. The 2024 Readers Digest Trusted Brands accolade comes about as the result of an independent survey of 1700 New Zealanders by leading market research agency, Catalyst. The cross-section surveyed reflect the demographics of the general population. The attributes that make a brand trusted – consistency, reliability, and value for money – are precisely the qualities that Sanitarium has embodied year after year. “When it’s voted by our consumers, who are our most important critics, it’s always pretty exciting for us. It reinforces that consumers are feeling the way about our brand that we would like them to,” says Sanitarium marketing manager Peter Davis. The award underscores the brand’s strong bond with its consumers, says Peter, an association that began in Christchurch when the company was first founded in 1901. Now headquartered in Royal Oak, Auckland, the company remains 100% New Zealand-owned. “It’s the only place in New Zealand that we manufacture from now,” says Peter. Despite the competitive and evolving breakfast food industry, where consumers now have more choices than ever, consumers seek products that provide both convenience and portability, particularly in today’s fast-paced world. With offerings like UP&;GO™ and Weet-Bix Bites™, Sanitarium meets the demands of families looking for portable nutrition options that can be consumed beyond traditional breakfast times. Sanitarium’s success extends beyond product offerings, as the company plays a significant role in promoting intentional giving and community support. For 32 years, the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon™ has inspired generations of Kiwi children to stay active, while the company’s 15-year involvement in the KickStart breakfast club programme currently sees more than 180,000 servings of breakfast across 1400 New Zealand schools each school day. Sanitarium also partners with the New Zealand Food Network, and together has distributed more than 10 million breakfast serves to communities in need. Sanitarium considers it a privilege to be in a business and an industry that has continuity and stability, allowing it to remain a valued part of the New Zealand community.
