Initially based in the Canterbury region where it operated under the name of Spartan South Ltd, the company lent its expertise to some of the most complex civil projects that went into the rebuild of Christchurch following the 2010-2011 earthquakes. Upon relocating to the Waikato, the company rebranded as Phoenix Civil, and has gone from strength to strength through its involvement in major projects in the subdivision, three waters and general infrastructure markets. The company is a finalist in the CCNZ Connexis Civil Training and Development Awards 2024 - which recognise companies that dedicate their time, passion and energy to making sure their staff have the right skills to get the job done. Phoenix Civil’s commercial manager Steve McPherson says the awards’ recognition is a reflection of the company’s ongoing commitment to its staff. “A steady organic approach to growth reflects the company’s insistence on recruiting only the best of the best, regardless of their position in the business, and a strong focus on cultural fit within the team,” says Steve. “We are all about having good people on the ground, and although skill and experience are important, we look foremost for people with integrity, the right attitude and the willingness to learn. “We work in a hazardous environment, so having people around who you can trust is critical. “ There are 40 in the team at Phoenix Civil, including Steve and general manager Inniss Anderson, backed by skilled project managers, site engineers, surveyors and a range of experienced machine operators and drainlayers . “We pride ourselves on our family culture, and in providing quality workmanship and a service our clients can trust,” sasy Steve. “We’re able to maintain this standard consistently and repeatedly because of the value we place on our staff – we aim to help each individual attain their potential – and by stressing teamwork and safety. “We particularly stress safety and development in our operations, and this year our work in that regard earned us a nomination in the Civil Contractors NZ Training and Development Awards, supported by the Connexis infrastructure training organisation. “Our efforts for a high standard in all fields were also recognised in 2022 when we won a Project of the Year Award at the Civil Contractors Waikato awards, for the Okareka Pipeline upgrade.” Phoenix Civil’s diverse range of contracting services includes earthworks, drainage, water and waste-water systems across the private, government and local government sectors. Some of Phoenix Civil’s more recent projects include major greenfields developments like the completion of Northgate Business Park on the outskirts of Hamilton and Arvida Whai Mauri Ora in Te Awamutu. “These two projects alone involved the stripping of more than 180,000 cubic metres of topsoil, 700,000sqm of cut-to-fill and the installation of over 23kms of pipework,” sasy Steve. Other key projects include the completion of the Okareka pipeline upgrade in Rotorua, the Cambridge wastewater treatment plant outfall structure on the banks of the Waikato River, and the installation of 1.3kms of 800mm-diameter PE pipe work for the Ngaruawahia wastewater treatment plant – to name just a few.
