62 | PROPERTY Tremains Real Estate T T Virginia Wright Partnership brings experts together In 2018, Anton and Tessa Jones made a lifestyle call and merged their skills and experience with friends and colleagues to collectively buy four separate Bay of Plenty real estate businesses. The couple sold their own First National offices to the group, which also bought local LJ Hooker, Skeltons and Claridges offices, bringing them all together as Tremains Real Estate. Because Anton and Tessa had been running their own real estate business, one or other of them always had to be available, even though they had 25 staff. Spreading the load of this much bigger office with the new partnership of five means that although their responsibilities have increased, they can go on holiday knowing the others are there to keep things going. Anton is the managing director and runs the business with CEO Hayden Duncan, along with top real estate agents Brent Bastin, Jeremy Pryor and Richard Laery. Tessa runs the financial side of things, including their accounts and deal management. Former owner of Claridges in Katikati, Angela Fowler, joined Tremains in 2018, and Grace Anderson joined earlier this year. “They’re both really well-established, high-profile real estate agents in Katikati, and between the two of them they’re at the top of their field,” says Anton. “They both have amazing teams which support them. They, along with Tremains’ support, have developed processes and systems which work really well for their own individual businesses. This, in turn, flows down to their clients and achieves outstanding results. It’s a win all round.” Tremains’ 70 staff includes 45 salespeople, and they have offices across Tauranga, and the Western Bay of Plenty in Katikati, Omokoroa, Tauranga Central, the Lakes, and Papamoa, with another about to open in Whakatane to service the immediately surrounding area. “Combining forces means we have really good people running the ship, and we’re able to provide the staff with the development, training and tools they need in today’s constantly changing environment,” says Anton. Training is ongoing, with weekly sessions as well as quarterly get-togethers for the staff across all the offices for more intensive support. Tremains Real Estate Bay of Plenty offers individual business-planning sessions, and has systems in place, which makes it easy to accommodate their staff’s personal situations. “Salespeople are all different, and all have different needs. Some want to be at the top of their field and want to grow a team, and some want to make a comfortable living and support their families – both bring different constraints. So, part of our job as the managers is to create a business platform for each of them that they can work off, whichever way they want to do it,” Anton explains. Underlying it all is Anton’s determination that the real estate business he’s part of should be known for its integrity, and for having good people doing their best for their clients. “I don’t like the connotations that are sometimes around real estate agents and want to make sure that we’re known for being professionals who do an excellent job.” Anton himself has no problem selling the Bay of Plenty lifestyle. Having left behind the hustle and bustle of Auckland, and before that London, to return to his hometown of Tauranga to bring up a family, Anton has firsthand experience of the region and is happy to share what it has to offer.
