It’s only been operational for a month and we’ve already had a dozen people walk through from some of the largest organisations we deal with in this country, who’ve said it’s one of the nicest warehouses they’ve ever seen.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Double-digit growth every year for over a decade, combined with lessons learned through Covid when supply chains were seriously disrupted, led to Shott Beverage’s strategic decision to build a 1000sqm warehouse to provide the resilience they need when dealing with their largely global market. Being the manufacturer of 107 flavours of real fruit syrup, using seasonally sourced natural ingredients, and supplying 22 markets around the world, means that being in control of as many variables as possible is an essential part of their strategy, especially as growth shows no signs of slowing down. Having integrated chillers and freezers inhouse gives them the key elements they need in order to have confidence in the reliability of their supply chain. “In other words, we’ve got frozen and chiller facilities as well as more space for buffer stock inside a purpose-built warehouse, so we’re no longer reliant on third parties. “We can store and ship our ingredients according to our own scheduling needs,” says CEO David Shearer. Shott Beverages was involved in the designand-build from concept stage all the way through, including decisions around using freshly stained, recycled pallets on the walls to enhance the aesthetics of the warehouse and lift it out of the ordinary, David explains. “There are two reasons for that: to show our international clients, especially our American and European customers, that we may be small compared to their local facilities, but we’re a very credible entity, and, we wanted to give our staff a space to work in that they can be proud of.” Another feature of the design that lifts it out of the ordinary was the decision to tilt the building in a way that creates space between the building and the roadway, which is both very effective from a Health & Safety point of view, as it means you can see almost 50 metres in either direction, and at the same time it creates a diamond-like aesthetic, which is pleasing to the eye. David gives credit to both their landlord, Northbridge, and Method Construction for what was a very well-run project built by a team that were not only professional, but very courteous and easy to deal with. “We’re really happy with this build. Shott Beverages is in the business of turning raw ingredients into a high-value product that is sought after around the world. From the beginning, the company has been manufacturing to European standards that are far more exacting than New Zealand’s, pursuing the international market they know they can supply. Part of knowing that they are a small player in global terms is understanding how important it is to ‘do things well because they don’t do things big’. The new warehouse clearly meets that brief.
