Clothier Construction BUILDING By the time Richard Clothier established his company Clothier Construction in 2015, he had been building in and around South Waikato for long enough to have a strong reputation for quality workmanship and a passion for delivering not just houses but homes. A few years later he was joined by his son Max, once he’d completed his apprenticeship, bringing fresh energy to the family-owned and operated company. Together they bring a combination of modern building techniques and traditional craftsmanship to the full range of residential and light commercial construction projects they work on. Recently the Clothiers embarked on a family project that began in 2022 when Richard’s father Henry Clothier, a property developer, was still alive. He saw the potential in a block of rural land on the edge of town running off the end of Ruru Crescent that had been zoned residential. “We thought ‘that looks good’ so we bought it and put a mix of 30 sections of different sizes, some of 470sqm’s, some 690sqm’s, one as big as 1890sqm’s right up on the top. “It’s got a bit of elevation so even though they’re mainly flattish sections they’ve got a nice outlook. We’ve got a lot of planting happening and a walkway that runs down to the river to the Mason Reserve which also has a walkway right out to the main road, so that makes it quite cool too.” His mother, Ann, is happy the family project is proceeding, with his sister, Beth McVerry, helping her on the financial side of things. Richard and Max are the heart of Clothier Construction, and Richard’s long-term partner, Sally Drake, is the designer they’re working with to come up with plans at different levels for their House and Land packages. They are also open to working with people who want to do their own new build, who may have specific ideas about what they want. “They can sit down with Sally to work on a concept and then we can come up with a House and Land contract they can take to the bank. “It can be difficult to buy a section in a subdivision to build your own house on, but they can do that here and we can build their home, or they can get their own builder to do it.” Clothier Construction have started one build already and have another completely different design currently in for consent, Richard explains. “My father used to say, ‘if you build it, they will come’, and it’s true, especially with house and land packages. Once we’ve got the walls and the roof on the one we’ve started, it’s a nice time for someone to buy, when they can walk through it and get the feel of it. Then they can choose the colours and potentially adjust the spec a little.” The Clothier family have a vision for this to be a family subdivision where people can happily build a life – hence the different-sized sections, some more suited for retired people, others for young families, encouraging the sort of mixed demographic that makes for a strong community. “Probably a little more old-fashioned in a way, with a cul-de-sac and that country warm feeling, good for kids,” says Richard. In between building people’s new homes, Clothier Construction has done a lot of renovation work over the years, especially for newcomers to the district. “The whole area is starting to look tidier with houses done up and new ones tucked in amongst them,” Richard observes. “Once the family subdivision is full there will be 30 more houses for people to call home as they settle into the relaxed lifestyle South Waikato has to offer.” Proud Supplier of Clothier Construction Gib · FramingTimber · Insulation&more
