A lamein Tana and Waimarie Halkyard own and operate Far North Pools, a company that services the rapidly growing region from Whangarei north. While Alamein founded the company in April 2018, with Waimarie joining as a co-direc- tor soon after, his experience in the industry goes back 20+ years. Based in Kaitaia, Far North Pools offers customers a one-stop shop for all pool and spa service and repairs. “I think it is because Alamein has had so much experience in building and maintaining pools that the business has got off to such a good start,” Waimarie says. When it comes to construction, Far North Pools specialises in using concrete, block, and shotcrete. They also design and build infinity pools and water features. “We’re able to really personalise a pool setting and if the customer is unsure of what material and design would work best, Alamein is happy to input his advice.” For those with existing pools, the company offers a comprehensive repair and mainte- nance service to bring an old tired pool and surrounds back to life. While private projects form a part of the work Alamein and Waimarie undertake, they have been fortunate to have built up strong relationships with the Ministry of Education and local Council in their region, some- thing that has kept the couple busy and the business ticking over during the challenges Covid-19 brought. “The Ministry of Education engage con- tractors up here to undertake their property work, and we sub-contract to them. The local Council oversee 3 or 4 community pools and Alamein has been engaged by them to do pool maintenance and reconstruction.” Waimarie says that Infinity Pools have become quite popular in coastal situations, where owners can enjoy the pleasure of being in their pool and looking out over stunning scenery beyond, without seemingly any barrier. With demand for his services steadily grow- ing Alamein and Waimarie have taken on two staff who they are training up. “We see this as an important stepping stone Sue Russell to progress the company and Alamein has a wealth of knowledge to share with these two young men.” Far North Pools are also licensees for NZ Lourvres and Waimarie says the quality of this product and its applications fits in very well with the range of products and services their company offers.
