The project won a recent New Zealand Insti- tute of Architects award. Aspec Construction was started in 1986 and offers four specialised departments – construction, interiors, commercial property maintenance services and design and build. Kane says a key point of difference is that all of the company’s directors and shareholders are actively involved in the business. “Our clients get to deal with the company owners from estimating to project manage- ment. This means any problems get dealt with straight away as it’s a flatter management structure,” he explains. Aspec Construction employs 40 staff in the company head office in Auckland and around 120 staff out in the field. The company also has specific capabilities in concrete, carpentry and framing allowing it to also undertake these aspects of the project in-house if necessary. Kane says this helps the company to better control project timing and quality. Apart from the traditional competitive tender process and design/build, Aspec Construction also offers a range of project procurement and delivery options tailored to suit the client. Aspec Construction is presently working on a number of projects in the educational, retirement, institutional and industrial sectors.
