Just two and a half years old the Auckland based business has exploded as awareness of the product grows and orders for the prefabri- cated ‘Nooks’ continue to escalate. The Nook Homes journey began when Jade and Brad were preparing to buy their first piece of land and build their own home on land in Kaiwaka. While Brad owned his own construction company at the time, the couple were time poor and decided they wanted to buy an ar- chitectural pre-fabricated home so they could begin to enjoy their new property straight away. Unable to find anything that was both architectural and high quality Brad and Jade set about designing and building a one-room Nook they called ‘The Hideaway Nook’. Replete with plywood interior and pine ship- lap cladding they made the call to showcase the dwelling in the Auckland Homeshow—giv- ing birth to Nook Homes. “Everyone was impressed with the quality,” says Jade. “After the Homeshow people asked if we could do larger units with bathrooms and kitchens. “From there the business has grown very quickly and we’ve released more designs, slowly gearing towards the vision where Nook Homes provides a range of really high quality minor dwellings right through to larger homes.” Having outgrown two previous workshops, the team at Nook Homes now operates from a commercial factory in Kumeu, building their beautiful Nooks ready for transportation, with a second site about to be opened in Central Auckland. “Customisation is very important to us, so that the client could almost do a ‘design and build’ but with a quicker turnaround time,” explains Jade. “None of our homes are exactly the same as the other. We have some top-end archi- tects who’ve been following our journey and now recommend us as preferred supplier for modular or smaller designs. A lot of interior designers are also coming to us for the quality in the finish we provide.” The ability to locate these beautifully crafted living spaces in some of New Zealand’s most challenging but dramatic locations is another key advantage. “Two weeks ago we delivered a unit by helicopter and we currently have a client looking at doing a development on the edge of a gorge. Another property in Waiheke has no road access but has the most spectacular views and we will get to another property by barge.” Ranging from 20sqm through to 140sqm with a 210sqm home in progress, Nook’s can also be designed and built to allow for future growth with additional modules added as the client’s needs change or equity increases. Reflecting upon the business’s extraordinary success, Jade says in addition to the Nooks’ ar- chitectural design and quality characteristics, the Nook Homes team is also extraordinary, working within a naturally happy culture of achieving something very special. The face of the business, Jade and Brad en- courage their clients to visit their show home and experience the quality and clever use of space that defies its compact size.
