The project involved 4km of pipeline from the water processing plant down No 1 Road and across Landscape Road. The CEO David Smythe said that although open trench was Tauranga City Council’s initial plan for this portion of the project. Smythe Contractors proposed directional drilling, detailing the bene its of this methodology, and the positive outcomes and it became the obvious choice. Smythe Contractors pulled out the ‘big gun’ for the project - a 54 tonne DD440t American Auger, with 220 tonne pullback capacity, capable of installing 1.2m diameter of pipe over 1km. David says it’s one of the largest drill rigs in New Zealand. The Smythe business was started by David’s grandfather Bernie in 1954 who passed the business on to David’s late father Mike, who was the irst to bring this type of rig into the country in the early 1980s. The Waiāri project involved installing a 700 900mm diameter pipe in sections, weighing up to 95 tons and 760m in length. The team were working in pits 15m long x 5m deep, that had to be shored up and protected, all within a narrow berm running down the narrow No.1 Road. It wasn't the only signi icant piece of equipment used on the project. Smythe Contractors also used a Vermeer Reclaimer which proved to be invaluable to remove sand and coarse silts from drill luids for reusing on the cleaning process, resulting in les waste and dry solids. This provided a much more environmentally friendly outcome. Using the right equipment and technology goes hand in hand with using highly skilled sta to operate it. The Smythe team have years of experience and a ‘positive can-do’ attitude. David said “The project required detailed design and pre-construction engineering, which our team were involved in”. The Smythe team gave valuable insights and advice which saved the project time and money. The project involved stringent and tight tolerances in terms of quality, and we certainly delivered. Our accuracy of drilling and the skill of our team were second to none.” The project involved extensive buy-in from the public and so a cooperative and collaborative approach was required, says the CEO. “Communication was key – keeping locals well-informed every step of the way and answering any questions or concerns. We de initely delivered in all respects on this project and especially with keeping the public satis ied and the local stakeholders were very complementary about how we handled the project,” “It’s great for local contractors to have the opportunity to deliver large infrastructure projects such as this. We are a 100% New Zealand owned company and employ locals to achieve sustainable economic growth. We are proud that Smythe Contractors won the contract against much larger industry players” It was started by David’s grandfather Bernie in 1954 who passed the business on to David’s father Mike. The company is now owned by a group of family shareholders and David says it is the longevity of the business, its team approach, the care and attention to detail in all aspects of the operation that continue to set us apart.
