Founded two decades ago by two New Zealanders, Orion AgriScience was bought by Singaporean based corporation Zagro seven years ago. Zagro signi icantly broadened Orion AgriScience’s global reach of chemicals, increasing its buying power and providing a more in-depth knowledge in respect to the supply of chemicals. Orion AgriScience supplies a vast range of generic chemistry for the protection of crops and animal health products into various industries in New Zealand including horticulture, forestry, arable, agriculture, viticulture, brush weeds, maize, forage crops, seed treatment and home and garden. Complementing the Christchurch Head O ice and subsidiary o ice in Albany, six territory managers are evenly spread across New Zealand to maintain close relationships with the client base. “Predominantly we sell direct to retailers but we support the sales process by assessing the clients requirements and giving advice to the retailers,” says General manager Peter Westaway. “In conjunction with the retailers’ sta my team spend a lot of time visiting the retailers’ bigger clients giving advice as to what products to use for the treatment required.” Timberlands is one of Orion AgriScience’s earliest customers and works directly with the company’s Auckland based Technical Manager undertaking trial work and looking for solutions to problems that arise in the forest. “One of the trials we have been running is for a glyphosate alternative. We did that last year and I think we will be doing it again. We also o er Timberlands market information about the best time to buy products, because there are a lot of market luctuations. We try to deliver value with our products both in terms of pricing and its e icacy in terms of killing the weeds they want killed.” Peter says chemicals are typically used twice year in forestry, once during pre-planting, and then release spraying which is the killing of the weeds for the irst two years of the trees life to improve their chance to grow well. Release spraying is usually carried in late spring when weed growth is at its height. Leaders in crop protection From the vision of the ancestors to the needs of the descendants, forestry and the business of growing pine trees is a long journey. Edging one hundred years young, Kaingaroa Timberlands Forest Estate has enriched current and past generations from the efforts of those who have gone before, while research and development today will create the resource of the future. Research and Development Manager Dr John Moore says as a business if Timberlands sat on its laurels and failed to innovate it would stagnate and fall behind, and the vast Kaingaroa estate is far too important for that, as are the efforts of those past generations. “Because of our long-term nature it is really important that our forests are resilient to future change. “We don’t know down to the detail what is going to come but we know about things like climate change and that the potential for new pests and diseases to get into New Zealand is really significant. “And so it is really important that we think about how we can make our forests more resilient to those sorts of things that could impact on the future.” Timberlands has a goal to increase forest productivity and to ensure a marketable wood quality that meets the needs of not only the current customers but customers and markets of the future. to page 72
