The current civil construction boom has Northland contractor Earthworx “sitting in a sweet spot with the niche market we have grown over seven years – and we’re still expanding our client base,” company principal Hans Garton says. Earthworx is based in Bream Bay, servicing the greater Whangarei district with a range of capabilities from sub-division construction, earthmoving, farm development and forestry roading, to retaining walls, rock-breaking, demolition and drainage. “Currently we’re constructing three major sub-divisions in Whangarei and the Far North and big site-works in Bream Bay, as well as more minor jobs such as hard- ill cartage, access-ways and house sites,” Hans says. Since escaping the Level Three lockdown, it’s been catch-up time for Earthworx whose current projects also include a slew of minor jobs from hard- ill cartage and access-ways to house sites. “Previously we have been involved in a number of district council projects, such as the Waihara Wetlands, Mangapai Caves Road culvert replacement and the new Abbey Caves Road carpark, as well as participating in emergency works such as the Lemons Hill slip repair,” Hans says. The company’s versatility is built on the expertise of its 23 sta , some with specialist quali ications in civil engineering, surveying and drainlaying, complemented by an in-house diesel mechanic and a Level Four health and safety practitioner. They’re supported by seven trucks and 34 items of plant – diggers, dozers, scrapers, tractor and scoop, rollers, graders and a mulcher mounted on an excavator. Advances in technology are re lected in Earthworx acquisition of new, high-quality Leica equipment for its GPS controlled machinery and rovers. Hans is Northland born and raised, and has over 20 years’ experience in the earthmoving and civil construction industries, while wife Tania Garton is a junior engineer in Earthworx, having completed her diploma in 2018. “Earthworx has grown into a high-achieving and well-regarded team,” Hans says. “Each member of our team contributes extensively, bringing with them a diverse range of knowledge and skills to share, thus contributing to the growth and maintenance of a sustainable business.” The evidence of that lies in the recognition Earthworx has received in the last two rounds of the CCNZ industry awards. In 2019, Earthworx won the $100,000-$500,000 construction projects category for the Rauhomaumau Road project at Tutukaka, and the following year won the $500,000-$1m construction projects category for SR40 Stage One earthworks, as well as the Environmental Award for the Waihara Wetlands project.
