First time entrants to the competition, company owners Brent Varley and Craig Parker knew Evolution Builders was producing great homes but wasn’t expecting to take home so many awards. In the Auckland/Northland/Coromandel region – the most hotly contested region in the country – Evolution Builders won the gold and regional category awards in the Resene New Home Over $2 Million category along with the Regional Pink Batts Craftsmanship award and the big one for the night - the Supreme House of the Year title. The project has also since been named in the national Top 100. “We’ve been hammering away for 20 years and to enter for the first time and take home so many awards was very special,” says Brent. “Due to Covid-19 this year’s awards had one of the largest amounts of entries resulting in a tough competition so our wins were a real accomplishment.” Matt Brew Architects designed the Auckland home that won the awards after Evolution Builders had previously built a home for Matt in the past. Brent says Evolution Builders had an instant rapport with the client who valued their honest approach and commitment to quality. He says the two year build was a dream project. “Our relationship with the client was stronger at the end than at the beginning indicating how great the process was.” The 435sqm home is situated over two levels and includes five bedrooms, three with ensuites, and a family bathroom. There’s also a second living room along with recessed balconies, which take in the sea views and provide cover, and a lift between levels. The whole lower level slab is a custom designed RibRaft slab system with the edges cantilevered out to give a floating effect with precast concrete insitu panels forming the solid elements to this structure. Brent says this design element was to raise the lower level up slightly so it gave a great view of the ocean. The sandy ground conditions necessitated 120 driven piles to the sandstone below to provide an incredibly stable base. Complex cedar cladding wraps around the house, up into the soffits and continuing to form the ceiling inside the home. Brent says this meant every detail had to be perfect – within millimetres. An eye catching iroko exotic hardwood screen is on the exterior of the house and was constructed on site by Evolution Builders. “It was all mortise jointed by hand and was a huge amount of work,” says Brent considering it amply demonstrates the huge skills of his team and contributing to the craftsmanship award win.
