Karen Phelps Bringing strong planning and project management skills to its clients’ residential projects was showcased recently when DC Builders won a number of accolades at the 2021 Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. Company directors and brothers, Mel and Justin Riley, both bring extensive experience as site supervisors with some of New Zealand’s largest commercial contractors and so have transitioned a number of processes considered the norm in this type of build to residential homes. For example, on the home that the company won a regional gold for in Auckland/Northland/ Coromandel for the New Home $1 Million - $1.5 Million category, being involved from the development design phase meant they could give the client additional options to accommodate their budget. “Getting around the table with the architect early means we can add value to all parties with buildability knowledge and build pricing,” explains Mel. “It’s a real positive for the project as the design background we offer means we know how to see things from this perspective and so the architect can be satisfied that the project is being built in the best way possible at the best price. Once on site we are also able to sketch/CAD or even present a 3D drawing and send it to the architect for an easier sign off process if we come across any tricky junctions or details. If things are presented clearly to the architect this makes it a smoother process when they are looking at something from the site team.” DC Builders also took out silver in the New Home $1.5 Million - $2 Million category in the competition for a stylish five-bedroom home in Redvale. The brothers think the awards demonstrate the capabilities of the DC Build- “Getting around the table with the architect early means we can add value to all parties with buildability knowledge and build pricing.” ers team to produce extremely high quality projects working for some of the region’s best architects. DC Builders works in Auckland and the Bay of Plenty. The brothers started their company in 2015 from a desire to return to their roots of residential construction and offer a more personal approach to building. From the design to the construction the brothers handle the entire process. Both trade qualified builders and Mel takes on the roles of pricing, design and project management leaving Justin free to take charge of the build on site. Their background in commercial construction has impressed upon the brothers the importance of planning and programming so that jobs flow smoothly. Mel says they are very technology focused and are always looking at better ways to use this in an industry which is typically a little slow to uptake new tech to aid the build process. DC Builders are members of Registered Master Builders demonstrating the desire the brothers have to be the best in the business. The company completes design and build, builds from clients’ own plans and works with a range of architects. A variety of projects are undertaken including new homes, renovations and reclads. The brothers employ a team of talented builders and are currently focusing on further growth. They have just hired a project manager in Auckland and are looking to expand their Bay of Plenty team. “We are very focused on developing the right team. We think outside the square and are creative in how we do things. Our team culture and trusted group of subcontractors are two of the most important aspects in achieving a great end result for our clients.”
