Follow us s les@vant gewindows.co.nz Karen Phelps Strong relationships have been a major part of the strategy Maddren Homes has developed to cope with the huge and constant change Covid-19 has thrown at the industry. “We are working closely with our valued suppliers and subcontractors, such as Vantage Windows & Doors, Northside Plumbing, Fluid Interiors and others, providing them weekly project schedule updates to allow jobs to be planned ahead, securing materials and labour in advance. In addition to this we have in-house procedures in place to make sure the Maddren team are communicating promptly and efficiently to help anticipate and avoid potential delays as the average lead in time for most suppliers used to be three weeks and now it’s three months,” says Maddren Homes general manager Rodger Scott. He says that being a New Zealand owned and operated family business has enabled Maddren Homes to pivot quickly and be adaptable and flexible. Maddren Homes is on target to increase turnover by 15% this year due to huge demand. “Basically we are working twice as hard to get half as much done combined with huge growth and labour shortages. It’s certainly challenging times,” he says. Maddren Homes is owned by Tony and Terena Anderson who purchased the company in 2007. Son Keegan is also a shareholder and director in the business. As a family owned and operated company Rodger says Maddren Homes is acutely aware that integrity is tantamount to success and that all builds – regardless of budget – are treated with the same degree of care resulting in top quality every time. “Not being part of a franchise has given Maddren Homes the freedom to create a culture where innovation is encouraged but values can’t be compromised. It’s about maintaining tradition but not being traditional,” he says. “We know what works and what doesn’t and what products will stand the test of time.” Rodger says that Maddren Homes aims to not only build to the New Zealand Building Code but to exceed it and in the process raise the standard of residential construction in New Zealand. As testament to this philosophy the company won in three categories in the 2021 Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition taking gold and best in the region for its Milldale show home, gold and best in the region in the volume/group housing new homes $450–750k category and silver in new homes $1–1.5M. The three-bedroom Milldale show home is clad in rusticated cedar and aluminium cladding. Details, such as the fact that the flush-mounted garage door is concealed within the cladding’s grooves and doubles as a bold feature wall, showcase the company’s innovation and the team’s craftsmanship. Inside elegant raked ceilings and crafted cabinetry further demonstrate skill. Materials transition from outside to inside seamlessly including dark cabinetry contrasting against an island of rich wood in the kitchen.
