| 87 BUILDING Mason & Mason: House of the Year Brothers proud of precision build Karen Phelps The award winning home incorporates three pods – a home, a standalone boatshed and a detached double garage linked by a covered breezeway. 022 697 8915 office@ppdecorating.co.nz P O Box 15384 | Hamilton The Mason brothers, Nick and Will, are hands-on builders in the extreme. In fact they don’t employ any staff and complete the construction aspect of the homes they work on themselves. It is this highly personal approach that has resulted in the exemplary levels of quality that have seen the brothers win their first gold in the Master Builders House of the Year award at the 2021 competition for the Waikato region. As first time entrants they were chuffed to also take home the Lifestyle award as well as making the top 100 nationally. “Although numerous houses we have worked on have won gold at the awards, it is great to have a home we have built under our own company win,” says Will. The brothers have been working together since 2003 when Will started his apprenticeship under the watchful eye of Nick. In 2009 they joined forces in business together and now bring collectively over 40 years of building expertise to clients’ projects. Based in the Waikato they work in this region on predominantly new homes – either design and build or from clients’ own plans. They work on two or three projects at a time, personally on site for each one and balancing the jobs between timelines for trades such as roofers etc to ensure good flow and efficient use of time for their clients. Although in the past they did employ staff in their company, it was fortuitously in 2019, just prior to the pandemic, that they decided to downsize to reduce stress and so they could focus exclusively on their clients’ projects to deliver the high quality results they aim for. “It means high standards as we are always there across all aspects of our clients’ projects. It’s always just us building their home. The feedback we’ve had has been 100% positive,” says Will. The award winning home is a case in point. They got the project as they had built the house next door. The client had been so impressed he commissioned them to do his home. The resulting contemporary, 325sqm cedar-clad home is positioned on the banks of Lake Karapiro and incorporates three pods: the home, a standalone boat shed, and a detached double garage linked by a covered breezeway. Will says that the clean lines and details, such as ceilings that vanish into the top of sliders and gibbed window reveals, required extreme precision. “We nicknamed this project the house half millimetre built,” he jokes. “It was a house where you couldn’t hide anything behind a boxed corner or scriber. Every cut is on show “Although numerous houses we have worked on have won gold at the awards, it is great to have a home we have built under our own company win.” with lots of fiddly details. It required super accuracy. The owners were awesome to work with as they had a massive design flair.” Will says the aim of Mason & Mason Building Contractors is to make each project easy and enjoyable for clients. Word of mouth referral is a strong source of business and also of great pride to the brothers who feel it reflects the high levels of satisfaction they deliver to their clients on every project. They are currently working on a variety of new homes across the Waikato and have several new builds booked in next year.
