The Patrick Hogan Retirement Village stands as a testament to Sir Patrick’s legacy and contributions to the racing and breeding industry, says Ryman Healthcare’s General Manager Northern Sales - New Zealand Simon Jantke. “Not only does it give the village a unique identity and make it more than just a location, it is also a way to pay respect and continue the legacy of pioneering locals,” he says. Born in 1939 to an Irish immigrant family, Sir Patrick began his journey in the horse breeding industry in the 1960s on the family farm, Fencourt Stud, alongside his father and brother. Undeterred by conventional wisdom, he ventured out on his own, founding Cambridge Stud. His bold decision to purchase an Irish stallion sight unseen, based on pedigree potential, proved to be a turning point that catapulted Cambridge Stud to widespread recognition and influence. Affectionately known as ‘Paddy,’ Sir Tristram, the stallion Sir Patrick acquired, sired an astounding 140 stakes winners, including 45 Group One winners and three Melbourne Cup champions. The legacy continued with Sir Tristram’s son, Zabeel, establishing him as a champion sire. Sir Patrick’s determination and competitive nature were evident when he became the first to offer guarantees on his horses, an innovation that ultimately contributed to his success. In recognition of his significant contributions, Sir Patrick was honoured with the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1992 and later knighted as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) in the 2000 New Year Honours. He and Justine, Lady Hogan were named New Zealand Breeder of the Year from 1994 to 1997, with Cambridge Stud being the leading vendor at the national yearling sales for an incredible 32 consecutive years. Sir Patrick’s achievements extended beyond New Zealand, as he became the first horse breeder to be inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2005. The following year, he was the inaugural inductee into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. His distinction reached even higher echelons, with an audience held by Pope John Paul II and a personal tour of Cambridge Stud by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990, highlighting the global impact of his contributions. Tragically, on January 6, 2023, Sir Patrick Hogan passed away at Waikato Hospital at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy that resonates throughout the racing world. Cheyne Chalmers, NZ CEO for Ryman Healthcare, expressed the company’s commitment to honouring pioneering New Zealanders who have made a significant impact on their communities and beyond. She says that as residents move into the Patrick Hogan Retirement Village, they not only find a place to call home but also become part of a community that pays homage to the indomitable spirit and remarkable achievements of Sir Patrick Hogan. “Not only does it give the village a unique identity and make it more than just a location, it is also a way to pay respect and continue the legacy of pioneering locals.” T T Karen Phelps Your local Patrick Hogan village electricians.
