BUILTsmart, a Family Legacy A family-owned and operated housing company, BUILTsmart aims to be at the forefront of revolutionising the construction industry, says Philip. Established in 1982 the company has earned a reputation for its unwavering commitment to quality, affordability and smart efficient building solutions to address New Zealand’s housing challenges. “Constructing prefab transportable modular homes in our custom designed factory provides us with the environment to achieve a higher standard of quality control for the entire building process. Our method is quick, clean and affordable.” The Leather family, deeply involved in various roles within the company, exemplifies BUILTsmart’s family-centric ethos. Started by Philip, a builder by trade, wife Fiona took a sales and marketing role. Daughter Aimee is the construction manager and her husband Boyd is a project manager. Another daughter Brooke runs the BUILTsmart trucking business and her husband Marc is a property manager for the BUILTsmart subdivisions. The family-oriented culture is evident in the longevity of the wider team, with some having been part of BUILTsmart for over 25 years. BUILTsmart extends beyond traditional home construction; it develops land, providing clients with comprehensive solutions. Currently it has subdivisions throughout Whangarei, The James, Three Mile Bush and Totara Parklands where it will just sell the sections, which range from 500-700sqm. Closer to home Thames Road, Paeroa (sections 600-700sqm), a lifestyle sub-division at Ohinewai, Huntly (sections from 50000sqm) and Waugh Lane, Huntly where it is offering 120 sections, and has completed stage one and two. BUILTsmart offers around 20 plans or design-and-build options, with the ability to build up to 166 square metres in a single level. For two level homes it can simply drop one building on the site with another on top. The company delivers approximately 250 homes annually and plans to scale up to over 400 with the opening of a new Feilding factory. Philip says that BUILTsmart’s approach to tackling New Zealand’s housing crisis involves working on a diverse range of projects for major government agencies, with BUILTsmart transportable buildings used as classrooms) and iwi along with private homebuyers. “Constructing prefab transportable modular homes in our custom designed factory provides us with the environment to achieve a higher standard of quality control for the entire building process.”
