Following a couple more permutations, today’s director Shaun Hoskin, established Huntly Door Systems in 2012. In September 2020, the business was rebranded to HDS in a strategic move to not be tied to a particular geography. “When I bought the business we had a team of 12 on one site in Huntly. Today we’ve grown to 38 staff with the addition of Indoorz another pre-hung door business in Takanini,” Shaun explains. He’s proud of the fact that the majority of employees are drawn from the local community – in a town the size of Huntly that makes the business a crucial employer, supporting in turn many local families. The range of products HDS and Indoorz deal with can be categorised as prehung doors, stairs, modular wardrobe systems and door hardware. Shaun says that integral to the company’s growth and diversification has been gaining the support of business mentor, Paul Coles, to assist with guiding the management team and Shaun in a manner that is sustainable. “We sat down and evolved a strategic plan with the vision to be New Zealand’s leader of Interior joinery products by 2030 so I’ve really concentrated on expanding our product range and service offering. Having the plan to guide decisions year on year has been critical to our growth and success.” This is where Indoorz comes in. Purchased in 2021 in the middle of the pandemic Indoorz is apart of the growth strategic plan and has provided a pathway to New Zealand largest metropolitan area and population. “Indoorz is now a key to the future of the group’s growth” says Shaun. A huge emphasis is placed on having the best possible manufacturing technologies, including 4 CNC units to machine their products Working with Shaun is an experienced team: A general manager, operations manager, business finance manager and a branch manager at Indoorz. “When we meet monthly we discuss where we are at in terms of the strategic plan. It’s always our focus.” HDS/Indoorz sell its products across a wide area, from the greater Auckland region through to Taupo and across to the Coromandel. In Coromandel, HDS has garnered long-standing relationships with group housing companies. “We have also recently appointed a Business Development Manager to head up the Bay of Plenty region and we have a customer in Taranaki, so we’re gradually extending our reach but doing it very sustainably.” Over the years doors have become fashion and design statements, from sliding doors, barn doors to secret or concealed doors. “We’ll basically produce any specialty door our customer wants.” The strategic plan contains a section devoted to company growth, so there is a keen interest in seeking new opportunities that fit within the company’s values and visions. “We plan very carefully what we will next do and we take the time to think about what customers we want to engage with.” As Shaun puts it, everyone sitting around the management table comes with a different set of skills. Some are business-minded, some are people-minded and some are focussed on product development, creating a very strong base from which growth takes place. “This makes for a challenging and future-driven work culture, where each of us challenges their colleagues to help the business grow faster, while focussing on sustainability in all parts of the business.” A visit to HDS and Indoorz website’s provides viewers with detailed information on the range of products manufactured and/or sold. Pictures evidence both the complex and beautiful array of stairs, doors and modular wardrobe systems on offer. “We sat down and evolved a strategic plan with the vision to be New Zealand’s leader of Interior joinery products by 2030 so I’ve really concentrated on expanding our product range and service offering.”
