Cross-docking is the practice of unloading goods from inbound delivery vehicles and loading them directly onto smaller outbound metro vehicles. It also works in reverse too, with smaller metro trucks bringing product in for consolidation.” Sitting on the east coast of New Zealand and off the beaten track, Gisborne’s. location can be challenging for logistics operators. A new Gisborne branch was established on the back of work previously secured in the town. Trevor says the new branch has filled a gap in the network to more effectively service the region with a one-stop-shop. “That branch has warehousing and cross-docking, with trucks based there. Inbound freight can be consolidated as well as distributed from there. “New Plymouth is our more recent site and really fills out our network. Like Gisborne, it can be a challenging location to service. “Historically we had a lot of trucks moving through that area but to have a fully functioning network we needed to have our own facility to handle and distribute freight. We now have our own site, resources, trucks as people there.” Completing Booth’s recent drive towards a comprehensive nationwide network was the acquisition of LG Anderson, and Anderson and Flowers on Wellington, in the first quarter of 2023. That acquisition included the fleet, facilities, staff and customers, and provided Booth’s Logistics with an extensive presence in Wellington with the full gamut of warehousing, delivery, container handling, freight cross-docking. “Booth’s has had an operation in Wellington for a long time and Andersons had been an extension of our network prior to acquisition. We saw an opportunity to consolidate our position in Wellington, and add value to that business by providing its customers with access to a nationwide network. They also had a very capable warehousing and 3PL business which we wanted to take some learnings from and extend through the country.” Reflecting upon the recipe for Booth’s successful journey through the last four decades, Trevor says it has been about responding to customer need, and also attracting good people and empowering them to run the business by making good decisions. “We have a unique culture that sets us apart. Our attitude is everything. From the moment the phone is answered and the product is delivered, customers will get one of our people who will make it all happen, and go that extra mile. That is a strong recipe for success.”
