A purpose-built bulk auger unloading semi-trailer hit the road for Jones Trucking’s North Island operations just before Christmas, while down south the company is looking to expand its one-truck delivery service out of Christchurch. Jones trucking specialises in handling farm-delivery for a range of high-profile companies including Dunstan Horsefeeds, which has been producing equine nutrition products since 1986. Jones Trucking has been delivering bagged Dunstan products to stud breeders and horse owners since that company was launched. It runs a fleet of late-model UD curtain-siders out of its Tamahere base next to the Waikato Expressway, and it’s gradually expanding its operational range south into the central North Island and east into the Bay of Plenty. The purpose-built bulk auger semi-trailer is engaged in supplying Dunstan Horsefeed mills with contaminant-free grains and compound ingredients to further promote equine-safe feed manufacturing. Gloria and Don Jones are still active in the company they founded, but today it’s run by their daughter, Sarah Ardern-Jones, as general manager, with Eddie Leef as business development manager, and Mark Crockett as logistics manager. The elder Joneses had built the fleet up with augur trucks, but in 2012 they sold those off to a rival company so they could re-invest in curtain-siders. The Kenworth rig with its augur marks a return to that form of loading and unloading of the Dunstan feed ingredients. “We’re definitely in a new growth period with the augur truck up here, while in the South Island we’re setting out to grow our stockfeed production clientele,” Sarah Ardern-Jones says. “This year everybody is saying that farmers are closing their wallets in anticipation of dry weather caused by El Nino, but while the equine stock-feed market has lost some smaller buyers, the demand from the established horse-breeding farms is still strong and steady. “We’re still doing what we do best – delivering stock-feeds to farms – ensuring our strong focus on service along with expanding our clientele and areas. “The company continues to grow thanks to a great team of hard-working delivery drivers who aren’t afraid of the physical work of slinging bags of stock-feed round,” Sarah says.
