ISS was formed in 1991 to answer the call of the industry to supply reliable, professional and innovative solutions to the rigging, scaffolding, engineering, and heavy transport sectors. As a family business where customer service is paramount, ISS offers a one-stopshop for height access services, construction and heavy industry maintenance. ISS was recently privileged and sufficiently proficient to win a rope access and scaffolding project for Whangārei’s Culham Engineering, who built and transported two massive fuel storage tanks for Stolthaven Terminals at the Port of Tauranga. At 25m in diameter, 20m in height, and weighing approximately 300 tonnes each, these tanks represent a substantial undertaking in scale and investment for Culham Engineering. ISS’s input was required during fabrication of the tanks in Whangārei, then their transportation via barge to the Port of Tauranga, a process which required meticulous planning and precise execution to synchronise with tides. Each tank had to be elevated while the trailer was positioned underneath, then transferred onto the barge. The tanks were securely fastened and took a three-day voyage to Tauranga, where they arrived in a condition identical to when they departed from Whangārei. ISS was on hand again at Stolthaven Terminals’ tank farm at the Port of Tauranga to provide rope access solutions for the removal of the temporary rigs used during transportation, and to erect more scaffolding on the new low sulphur fuel oil tanks for their insulation to be installed and their post welding on site. ISS general manager Brenden Solomon says this was a massive undertaking for Culham Engineering and a game-changer for the city of Whangārei, with Culham Engineering making substantial upgrades to its infrastructure including a rebuild of its roadways to accommodate loads in excess of 300 tonnes, and an extension to the wharf to enable some of the largest cranes in New Zealand to safely reach the very edge of the wharf. ISS was immensely proud to support Culham Engineering in such a huge endeavour. “Our people are our biggest asset and as well as our full time, in house health, safety, and environmental manager, we also employ a full time, in-house trainer.” ISS has also been busy working for Channel Infrastructure, formerly Refining NZ, supporting upgrades, growth, and maintenance to fuel storage facilities at its import terminal at Marsden Point. Industrial rope access techniques allow the highly experienced ISS staff to move around tank structures, while scaffolding is used to access external and internal areas. ISS places health, safety, and environmental compliance as a top priority. Its strong governance framework ensures processes and values are ingrained in all employees, visitors, and customers. A full-time health, safety, and environmental manager oversees the implementation and monitoring of all policies and procedures, and ISS holds various industry health and safety accreditations and prequal New Zealand accreditations. “Our people are our biggest asset and as well as our full time, in house health, safety, and environmental manager, we also employ a full time, in-house trainer, and have developed a training program that ensures the continual upskilling of our rigging, scaffolding, rope access, and confined space staff,” Brenden says. “Our employees make up an extremely skilled, reliable, and efficient workforce, and this translates into efficiency, quality, and cost saving for all of our clients.”
