KEEP YOUR PROJECTS MOVING Building on the core elements of civil construction has been a key to growing the business for Bay of Plenty-based Precision Civil. The company, based in Tauranga, has built a name for its modern and innovative civil construction and groundwork solutions. Precision is at the forefront of its services, and sophisticated 3D technology combined with technical precision, multi-disciplinary skills and expert knowledge gives the company its edge Owners Mason and Paula moved to the Bay from Taupo seven years ago, and brought their burgeoning business with them. They started off subcontracting to local companies and grew the business from there. “I had a couple of contacts with guys that we’d bumped into on jobs at different parts of the country,” Mason said. “As I met a few people, it just led into what we’re doing now.” He said from the beginning, the company had provided the core elements of civil work including earthmoving, pavement and drainage. “We’ve always done those disciplines.” Seven years later, they’ve continued with these services, working with local builders and developers. “We’re out on the road constructing public infrastructure, civil drainage sector, but we can do private drainage as well as civil drainage.” Mason is a certified drainlayer, which is a requirement for licensed work. “There’s slightly different requirements - slightly different inspection criteria. “With civil, you are quite often just working with the engineer. With building work, you’re working with the council, drainage inspector.” For the future he would like to develop the business, but in a sustainable way. “It’s always a long process to find people, train people and grow.” He was constantly advertising and was on the lookout for additional staff. “It’s just trying to match the volume of work and resources available (with staffing). “We’re definitely on the look for the right people. That really dictates what we are able to do and what we are able to take on.” The company has around 20 items of kit, including excavators and trucks, bulldozers and rollers, most with 3D capability. They were progressively building on that. “We pretty much run our own fleet, we hire just to fill the gaps. We definitely try and resource everything with our own machinery.” They have just completed a job at a large residential development at Omokoroa with 54 sections, one of a number going up in the area. “We have been busy with residential development over the last couple of years.” But it had been commercial development in the past five or six years that had been the mainstay for the company, with earthmoving, drainage and pavement work, Mason said. And it looked like the growth being experienced would carry on. “I’d like to think it’s going to be consistent. There still seems to be a lot of jobs.” The company had work lined up six months out. “Certainly, the season’s looking good.”
