78 | Kiwi Sheds From sheds to aircraft hangars T T Kelly Deeks BUILDING Proudly New Zealand owned and family operated since 1998, Kiwi Sheds has provided thousands of Kiwis with great looking, durable sheds to serve the needs of their business, their farm, or their family. Kiwi Sheds has a product offer that ranges from garages and workshops to lifestyle barns and implement sheds and on to the larger more commercialised storage facilities, warehousing, and aircraft hangars. Rob Gauld and his team at Kiwi Sheds have noticed an emerging trend in the past few years of clients with rural property and a bit of financial backing putting up multiple sheds for other small businesses to operate from. “There’s a real need for small businesses to get out of the hustle and bustle of traffic and congestion in the city and locate their business rurally,” Rob says. “It’s a really great way of getting away from the high cost of setting up a business inside the city area and if they need to work in town, they can travel to town and then come back to a reasonably serene working environment.” Kiwi Sheds is working with several key clients on ongoing rural business park type developments which keep on growing to meet this demand. A current project has its 10th Kiwi Shed now being installed and the 11th is set to start in January/February. These are all reasonably sized buildings with the current one 35mx18m and several previous buildings up to 50m long. “We work closely alongside land owners to navigate the minefield of inordinate compliance issues from councils who seem to struggle with the concept of letting people use their land for meaningful purposes,” Rob says. Part of the Fair Dinkum Sheds group, one of the largest networks of Cold Formed Steel Building distributors in Australasia, the initial design and systems utilised by Kiwi Sheds’ was tried and tested in Australia. Rob says while the Aussies would typically knock up a shed quickly and cheaply, the New Zealand market was a bit more particular about the quality of the finished product. So Kiwi Sheds evolved with the market and the concept of a shed building company changed rapidly in its first 10 years of being in New Zealand. “We’ve achieved pretty good quality here in comparison to what’s going on across the ditch. “We adapted to our market’s needs, we expanded the range and the type of buildings, we became very flexible in our offering, and we maintain that quality with everything we build today.”
