Amon has had a wide variety of experience during his building career, which started with his apprenticeship in Whakatāne after leaving school aged 16. With one grandfather a carpenter and the other an architect, construction was in Amon’s blood, and he gelled with the work immediately. “I thought this is hard work, but I enjoy it. I had a great first boss, who was a great teacher, and we did some really beautiful new builds and renovations together.” It was during his apprenticeship that Amon first saw the value in building strong relationships with clients. He made it his job to make them happy. “A happy client means a successful project.” Amon went on to work on cookie-cutter homes, renovations of 100-plus-year-old villas, straw bale homes, and group housing projects before setting up Amon Perry Builders in 2016. Through his previous roles he has become well-versed in many different aspects of the construction industry, including traditional and alternative methodologies and business practices.
