PCI’s growing portfolio of successfully completed projects includes several hotel projects and a range of residential, heritage and commercial ventures. With the addition of its construction division, along with its project and design divisions, PCI continues to expand, and is equipped to provide a complete “life-cycle” service for clients. This is evident in PCI’s recent completion of Four Square Ellerslie’s transformation, James says. “Time is money in retail, and when the owner/operator of Four Square Ellerslie approached us with his vision to refurbish the store, he was determined to accelerate the process. The brief was clear: completely gut Based in Broadlands just north of Taupo, father and son Syd Taylor and Taylor Long have been in business together as Taylor Long Construction since 2015, working mainly on industrial and commercial projects. Now 30, Taylor started working with Syd in his previous construction company A. S. Construction when he left school to start his apprenticeship at the age of 15. The name change came when Taylor became a director of the company nearly 10 years ago. Their staff numbers vary between 12 and 20, depending on the number and scale of the projects, which may take anywhere from six months to three years. “We do anything from small refurbishments to large-scale commercial projects and often work with budgets anywhere between $1million and $10 million,” says Taylor. They are well-resourced with both staff and machinery to have more than one project going at any given time. They generally manage the project from start to finish, regardless of its size, with either Taylor or Syd running it, from quote, through ground works to completion. Whether it is a new build or a renovation, they often use Formsteel, especially on their larger- scale builds over 1000sqm, such as the refurbishment of the New Zealand Defence Force’s military kitchen, which Syd completed the store and undertake a full refurbishment in as short a time as possible.” For PCI, the answer was simple – fully transform a tired supermarket into a stylish and modern retail space that aligns perfectly with Four Square’s current brand standards. “With PCI’s multi-faceted expertise both on-site and off, the project was expedited by six weeks, finishing on budget and most importantly, on time within 82 hours,” James says. It has been an extremely busy year for the PCI team and with several large projects for Foodstuffs, Argosy and Fletchers currently underway in the Far North, Auckland, Wellington and the South Island, there won’t be any slowing down when entering the New Year. With the company’s cross-pollination of all its services, PCI is bringing a new light to design-and-build services within the industry, James says. “PCI bring a level of professional expertise in all areas of the built environment to New Zealand, with our different procurement schemes, methodology and expedited programme strategy, we bring a cutting edge to construction.” In parallel with the design-and-build sector, PCI offers individual services if required, comprising project management, procurement, design and main construction. last year. Being in Waiouru on the Central Plateau means it is considered a high risk for earthquakes. “We basically dismantled the existing 30-year-old building and used an awful lot of steel to strengthen the structural elements for earthquake protection. We rebuilt a new, open-plan kitchen area with two large extensions big enough to feed 1200 people three times a day,” says Syd. By contrast, Taylor and project manager Cole Hall’s recently completed three-year project involved working with Permapine to design and construct the largest timber treatment plant in the Southern hemisphere. They poured 3000 cubic metres of concrete to support heavy steel columns, and then used the biggest laminated beams they had ever worked with for the buildings. “They’re extensively engineered timber beams measuring 1200mm wide by 180mm deep, and the largest one spanned 20 metres. The roof of one 600sqm building had to be built on the ground, then the whole thing lifted on to the steel columns by cranes, so it wasn’t without its logistical challenges, which made it all the more rewarding,” says Taylor. Being involved in the concept and design, and using the latest technology and kitsets, whether timber or steel, is par for the course for Taylor Long Construction, and they have staff with the various specialised skill sets needed to successfully complete the projects on time and on budget. End-to-end project development and construction management that delivers outstanding results.
