| 117 JOINERY Hopkins Joinery T T Sue Russell Two divisions adds strength to business The business has two main divisions – custom-made kitchens and custom-made aluminium joinery. Hopkins Joinery in Putaruru has a long history, which founder Ron Hopkins and the team of skilled craftsmen, sales and administration staff, are very proud of, as they provide a diverse range of services for customers across south Waikato. Established by Ron in 1977, the business has two main divisions – custom-made kitchens and custom-made aluminium joinery. In 2005, Ron was joined by co-director Ryan Hill, who now takes care of the kitchen division. Having the two arms to the company provides strength for the business, ensuring there is plenty of work for the team to engage in, and it also creates a diverse learning environment where different skills can be nurtured. Office administrator Trisha Pulman, who has been with Hopkins Joinery for a year, says it’s a great company to be a part of. “We have the business systems and experience to be able to take on projects from commercial through to residential. We also undertake renovations and upgrades to existing kitchens and if a customer isn’t sure what might work best, we’re in a good position to give design ideas,” says Trisha. Having been part of the south Waikato business community for so many years, Hopkins Joinery has developed strong relationships with experienced local builders and tradespeople. This means that if a kitchen has been commissioned, Hopkins Joinery is easily able to recommend plumbers, electricians and builders for a complete installation fit-out. On the aluminium joinery side of the business, Hopkins Joinery specialises in the Vantage brand, with every order custom-measured and priced. All aluminium joinery is made on site and can be installed by the team. “We have a large workshop area and when customers visit the site they can see examples of our work in our showroom. We are here to offer ideas, and we display a range of bench tops and cabinetry as there are plenty of options to consider. “Our aim is to ensure the design process is a positive and engaging one and to find solutions that suit each customer’s circumstances,” says Trisha. When Hopkins Joinery measures up a project, customers are provided with multiple options to choose from. This gives them plenty of choice and enables them to add their own personalisation, while also taking budget limits into account. “I think one of our strengths is that with so many years behind us, we know how long a build will take and we make sure we keep in touch with our customers throughout the design and build phases. “ It’s always an exciting moment when new aluminium joinery or a new kitchen is installed.” Trisha says that one of Ron’s business principles is about ensuring that every project, no matter its size or budget, is given the very best attention. “We know word of mouth is what our reputation has been built on and we view every project we take on as representing the standard of craftsmanship we are known for.” Hopkins Joinery currently has a project underway, completing the cabinetry for designer Kitchen Design Application, a project that has been years in the making given the unique architectural design of the build. “Considering the location and resources available to the homeowner of the property it is a privilege to be a part of this process. We are certainly looking forward to seeing this project come to life.” Beyond kitchen and aluminium joinery, the team at Hopkins Joinery design and build bespoke furniture pieces as well as repair existing furniture items, in keeping with their style and age. Trisha says there are projects booked through to Christmas, when the business will shut for a month to give everyone a good break and return to work when other building trades are back at work.
