Opened to students in term one 2024, the new S Block replaces Cambridge High School’s former S Block, which was deemed not fit for purpose way back in 2015. “It was not fit for purpose on so many levels,” says Cambridge High School principal Greg Thornton. “Among other issues, it had a heating conduit which ran around the door frame. If you leaned up against the door frame in the winter you would burn your arm on the hot water running through it.” The original S Block had 11 classrooms, and four more were added to the new block to accommodate Cambridge High School’s upward trend of consistent growth, due in part to the strong housing development in and around the township, which is expected to continue for the next 20 years. The new S Block takes a U-shape in response to the spatial limitations of the school campus and a landscaped area to the north, including some mature oak trees, one of which is now providing shade and shelter to the top of the U-shape’s internal courtyard. This is not only an outdoor area with seating for break times, but also doubles as an outdoor amphitheatre for music and drama performances. Inside the building, the 15 classrooms are split over two floors. There are dedicated learning spaces for music, art, media, digital technology, electronics, and careers, as well as classrooms for students who need extra learning support. Arts are located in the upper-level classrooms, across the back of the U where they can take full advantage of the abundant natural light flooding in, while the lower level is home to the music classrooms, which flow out to the courtyard through sliding doors. Next to the careers room is a fully functioning cafe where students can train for their Certificate in Barista and Service Skills while serving other students and staff. “Hospitality is a viable career pathway for our students, so this is a great skill for them to walk out of here with. They’re not only getting their barista training, but they’re learning to run the cafe as well,” Greg says. Cambridge High School can also use that space to host fundraising activities and community events. S Block’s precast concrete structure brought benefits around speed of construction, and will also require minimal maintenance by the school going forward. The panels feature art by Ngati Koroki Kahukura artist Eugen Kara, which has been sandblasted into the exterior concrete wall. The design draws inspiration from Māori patterns including Poutama, which represents the journey through life and the journey towards attaining knowledge. In being worked round the school’s existing landscape S Block looks and feels like a natural addition to Cambridge High School. Greg appreciates the support of the Ministry of Education in getting the building completed and says this wonderful building has been worth the wait.
