Upgrades are being carried out to the club’s changing facilities, administration offices and conference and events spaces, by Northland- based construction company Canam Group. The project is slated for completion about April 2025, just ahead of the new football season, says TFC club manager Don McDonald-Spice, and it aligns with a broader vision to strengthen TFC’s position as a premier sports hub. “We’re here for everyone in Whangarei, no matter their age or background. We’ve become the heart of football in the area, and we aim to keep growing that connection,” says Don. The largest football club in Northland, TFC serves as a venue for senior and junior club soccer, a club cricket season, frisbee golf and general community recreation, says Don, who has been part-time club manager since 2017. First established in 1968, Tikipunga Football Club has programmes for all ages and stages; the club is not just a football institution, but a community cornerstone, hosting sports festivals, supporting sports teams and developing talent throughout all grades. In June 2025, an all-weather turf funded by the local council will complement the new upgraded facilities at TFC, further boosting the club’s ability to host large-scale events. Previously, the club had five cramped changing rooms with one communal shower block, which no longer met the needs of its growing and diverse player base. The new development includes six world-class changing rooms, each equipped with private showers and toilets. This improvement allows TFC to host male and female teams simultaneously. A sleek, consolidated roofline that improves the club’s aesthetics and functionality is also going up, and two multi-purpose function rooms with separate kitchens will enable diverse events to be held. Dedicated office space will centralise football administration by bringing together Northland Football Club (NFC) and Northern Regional Football (NRF) under one roof for the first time. Hosting offices for NFC and NRF positions Tikipunga as a central hub for talent development, giving local players a pathway to compete at higher levels. “With these new facilities, we’re ready to welcome teams from Auckland and beyond without a hitch. It’s a huge leap forward for us,” says Don. Canam Group, a leader in construction and refurbishment since 1955, is the main contractor and Scope Project Management is managing contractor on behalf of the club. Known for delivering high-quality commercial builds across New Zealand, Canam Group has successfully delivered numerous notable commercial projects across Auckland and Northland, including Whangarei Civic Centre and Kaipara Service Centre. “Canam’s team has been exceptional. Their project manager Paul Andrews, a footballer himself, brings a helpful perspective so we can create facilities that truly suit our needs,” says Don. The development, which has been almost a decade in the making, blends world-class facilities with a community-first ethos. With it, TFC is poised to inspire future generations and continue its legacy as the heart of Northland football. www.morecroft.co.nz | 0800 33 33 11 | Auckland | Whangarei | Tauranga | Hamilton | Wellington
