Throughout its more than 60-year history, Hayes has also demonstrated a strong commitment to training apprentices. This commitment continues today, thanks to Hayes’ unwavering focus on supporting young people and investing in the future of New Zealand’s manufacturing sector. Founded in 1960 by Tom Hayes, a born engineer with a flair for making and repairing machinery, Hayes International has evolved and grown through the years to become a specialist manufacturer with a skilled team of over 100 employees. Since 1999, Hayes International has operated as part of the Bradbury Group. Hayes Rollformers – used to form steel profile products such as corrugated iron – are today being sold to over 90 countries around the world. Hayes International works closely with Apprentice Training New Zealand (ATNZ) to provide career pathways for young people by hosting mechanical engineering and fabrication apprentices. Under this training scheme, ATNZ employs the apprentices and supports them from the get-go with a dedicated account manager. It means that Hayes can get on with the job of training, secure in the knowledge that ATNZ is there to provide mentorship and assistance to keep apprentices on track. “We treat our apprentices exceptionally well: it’s a huge investment in time and resources – we pay a premium for them to work with us and be supported through ATNZ,” says Shona Taylor, HR manager, Hayes International. “We do this because we are committed to supporting our wider industry and manufacturing as a whole, as well as providing career pathways in the trades for young people. We take pride in training quality apprentices with excellent skills and widening the industry talent pool.” Hayes International has certainly nurtured a lot of talent through the years. One of their past apprentices, Perrie Thomas, was named ATNZ Apprentice of the Year in 2019. Last year, their young apprentice Sam Waters was named ATNZ Rookie of the Year. “Sam came to us as a 15-year-old Gateway student, who then approached our factory foreman to see if there was an opportunity to come here and start an apprenticeship. He’s done so well, and is midway through his apprenticeship. We also have another apprentice, Zane in fitting/machining. Both are producing excellent work and are impressing their supervisors. We also have two more coming soon, both sourced through ATNZ.” Shona has nothing but praise for ATNZ account manager Jo Brierley, who stays in regular contact with Hayes and their apprentices. “Jo is focused on matching quality employers with quality apprentices and does a fabulous job. She closely monitors the progress of our apprentices and keeps them motivated. Jo frequently comes to see them on site and the apprentices know they can reach out to her for support.” Apprentices with Hayes are fortunate to work with the latest equipment, including a newly installed high-speed milling machine, and more new machinery is coming soon, Jo says. As well as training apprentices, Hayes participates in career expos, supports school Dana SAC New Zealand Ltd, proudly supporting New Zealand Industry and Hayes International with quality Fluid Power solutions for over 20 years. 9 Bishop Croke Place, East Tamaki, Auckland 09 250 0050 www.dana.com Hydrapower Systems Hayes International PROUD PARTNERS OF
