DMW Trailers Ltd: 50th anniversary T T Karen Phelps REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Hamilton-based DMW Trailers is celebrating 50 years of manufacturing excellence in 2024, marking half a century of family ownership and continuous innovation in New Zealand’s marine industry. Founded in 1974 by boat builder Rollo Dutton in Te Rapa, Hamilton, the company has grown from supplying local boat manufacturers to becoming the preferred trailer choice for over 35 dealers nationwide. “Throughout its journey, DMW Trailers has maintained its commitment to quality and innovation, having produced more than 23,000 trailers,” says company managing director Brad Dutton. The business has remained in family hands throughout its history, passing from founder Rollo to his sons Gary and Greg, and now into its third generation with Greg and Trudy’s son Brad having joined the team in 2015. Bringing expertise in marketing and sales from his background in the marine industry, Brad has recently become a financial shareholder, ensuring the continuation of the family legacy. He says the company’s growth has been marked by strategic decisions and expansion. In 2003, it relocated to a purpose-built factory in Karewa Place, Te Rapa, which is currently being extended to nearly double its size to accommodate increased production demands. The company’s pioneering spirit is evident in its history of innovation, says Brad. In the late 1980s, it revolutionised the industry by introducing the multi-roller-style trailer system, moving away from traditional keel support designs. “This breakthrough significantly improved boat launching and retrieval capabilities,” says Brad. In 2017, it further distinguished itself by designing and implementing marine-specific DMW MAG Wheels as standard across its entire range, from jet-ski trailers upward. This commitment to innovation and quality has helped secure partnerships with major boat manufacturers, including Stabicraft, Senator, Haines Hunter, and Buccaneer. The company maintains its focus on New Zealand-made components where possible, including Aerofast tie-downs, wind-up jockey wheels, and winches. It also exclusively imports Genuine Bearing Buddies from the USA, fitting them as standard on all trailers. DMW Trailers offers comprehensive services, including trailer repairs, refurbishing, and WOF work, along with installation and overhaul of various braking systems. This full-service approach has helped build lasting relationships with customers and dealers, says Brad. He is proud that the company’s connection to the marine industry runs deep. Greg Dutton’s contribution to the industry was recognised in May 2016 when he was inducted into the NZ Boat Show Hall of Fame for his 40 years of service to the New Zealand marine industry. Both Greg and Brad are life members and hall of famers of the NZ Water Ski Racing Association, with Brad organising the Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Classic, which also celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2024. “We know boats from our long involvement in the marine industry, and every DMW Trailer is custom built to the boat it sits on. For that reason we get a better fit and an easier launch and retrieve,” Brad says.
