But we rose to the challenge, completing the work safely and ahead of schedule with a robust methodology developed entirely in-house.” CONTRACTING A trailblazing achievement from a nationwide leader in piling and ground retention services has been chosen as a finalist at the Civil Contractors of NZ Hynds Construction Awards 2023. CLL Solutions Ltd, headquartered in Kumeu, made the cut for its pioneering work on the Keith Hay Park shaft-drilling project, part of Auckland’s Watercare Central Interceptor upgrade. The largest wastewater project in New Zealand, Watercare’s super-sized tunnel will run for 16.2kms under Auckland and the Manukau Harbour. Once complete, the epic upgrade will significantly reduce wastewater and storm-water overflows across central Auckland. CLL Solutions general manager Sean Henry says the project sets new benchmarks in shaft- drilling capabilities, and was selected for the Excellence in Technology & Product Innovation Category at the Auckland CCNZ Awards. Tasked with the drilling of 2 no 80 and 64-metre-deep respectively and 4.2- metre-diameter shaft with a tolerance of 1:200, CLL Solutions tackled a challenge not yet achieved in New Zealand by a local contractor. “This kind of work has been done internationally, but never to that depth and diameter in New Zealand,” says Sean. “Initially, the clients were planning to bring in international expertise. But we rose to the challenge, completing the work safely and ahead of schedule with a robust methodology developed entirely in-house.” CLL Solutions’ construction manager on the central inceptor project, Juan Santacruz, says the shaft and cascade manhole required extreme precision to intercept a tunnel 80 metres below ground, with tolerances demanding millimetre accuracy. The project showcased CLL’s ability to innovate and problem solve through its commitment to information sharing with overseas counterparts. “We employed bespoke tools, a fluid support system using bentonite to mitigate shaft collapse risk, and we used a mix of drilling satellites shafts and a rimming to advance the diameter penetration,” says Juan. The team prepared for the unprecedented shaft installation by communicating with global companies that had achieved similar drilling feats, and throughout the project gave live progress updates to ensure accurate methodology. CLL’s team managed to complete the shafts’ drilling in just six weeks. “The result is a structure designed to last 100 years, connecting storm-water inlets to the single manifold that links to Auckland’s main tunnel system. We’re proud of the team’s ability to think outside the square and deliver solutions that others might consider impossible,” says Juan. Beyond the Auckland Watercare Central Inceptor project, CLL Solutions’ recent work has included slip repairs on State Highway 1 at Mangamuka, and a range of civil and commercial construction projects nationwide. Founded 35 years ago by Terry Donnelly, CLL Solutions Ltd has grown into one of New Zealand’s leading foundations, ground improvement, slip repair and ground retention specialists. With offices in Auckland, Waipapa in the Far North, Tauranga, and Christchurch, CLL Solutions Ltd operates nationwide and employs around 300 civil construction personnel across the board, from senior management to ground crews. CLL Solutions Ltd is an employee-owned company, fostering a collaborative culture underpinned by innovation, says Sean. “We have the largest fleet of piling rigs in New Zealand and an entire department dedicated to training staff to make sure we have the right level of skills across the company.” We at Hambly Haulage are a family run business and your one stop Haulage and Excavation shop!
