52 | Company racks up impressive portfolio Since 2017, Heatwave has worked extensively alongside the Link Alliance, an international consortium delivering the $5.49 billion City Rail Link. Heatwave Mechanical and Maintenance T T Lindy Andrews “Primarily, our work has been around Britomart Station. Last year, we did all the building services, including HVAC, fire, electrical, communications, radio, hydraulics and passive fire doors.” CONTRACTING Auckland’s Heatwave Mechanical and Maintenance has been involved in some of the city’s most transformational infrastructure projects, including the $1.4 billion Waterview Tunnel, City Rail Link and the $1.52 billion Central Interceptor wastewater project. “We have a team of 40 engineers, project managers, site managers and tradesmen as well as a chartered professional engineer,” says director Maksim Manko. “We design and build mechanical and HVAC systems – mostly heating, cooling and ventilation.” After working for the company for nine years, two years ago Maksim, along with Teina Tomokino, joined Grant Price as directors. He says Heatwave’s engineers take on the more challenging and “cool” projects, like the novel process water-treatment system recently completed for University of Auckland’s Leigh Marine Reserve Laboratory. Delivering the system was no easy feat. Seawater is pumped up a cliff and circulated through a tank farm. The water is then run through specialist water-filtration units and valves, as well as holding tanks, pumps and air scourers, while delivering both cold and tempered water. Since 2017, Heatwave has worked extensively alongside the Link Alliance, an international consortium delivering the $5.49 billion City Rail Link (CRL), New Zealand’s biggest and most complex rail project. “It’s massive,” Maksim says. “Primarily, our work has been around Britomart Station. Last year, we did all the building services, including HVAC, fire, electrical, communications, radio, hydraulics and passive fire doors.” Waitematā Station (Britomart) – a two-way through station, will ultimately almost double the number of trains entering the city, with the network carrying up to 24,000 passengers per hour at peak times. Two new stations are also being built. Te Waihorotiu Station runs underneath Albert Street, with entrances on both Wellesley and Victoria streets. Karangaa-Hape Station is just off Auckland’s famed Karangahape Road, with entrances on Mercury Lane and Beresford Square. The CRL will connect to the Western Line at a redeveloped Maungawhau Station (formerly known as Mount Eden Station) – less than 10 minutes from downtown Auckland – opening up the entire rail network. Ongoing maintenance is key to the function, safety and enhanced design life of these and other essential infrastructure projects. Maksim says Heatwave will continue to provide maintenance services to CRL over time. And while the Waterview Tunnel project was completed in 2017, the team continues to maintain the cooling systems they designed and installed at the north and south ventilation shafts. Working on the Central Interceptor wastewater pipeline’s Mangere Pump Station has been another massive achievement. Having been at the forefront of many billions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure – including the Auckland region’s hospitals – since 1978, Heatwave looks forward to growing its expertise and experience, while positively influencing the way Aucklanders live, work and play. “Looking forward we will continue to grow our skill sets and workmanship,” says Maksim. “We will keep learning and improving, while growing our reputation in the market.” A member of the Construction Sector Accord, Heatwave is committed to delivering infrastructure projects in a respectful, sustainable, resilient and productive way.
