More than just a design element, it is the foundation of inspirational building. For over 60 years, Jacobsen has honoured that ethos by bringing New Zealanders the very best in world-class flooring. Founded in 1962, Jacobsen is a third-generation New Zealand family business, whose trusted name is synonymous with style, texture, innovation and performance. Representing some of the best, world-leading brands at the forefront of innovation, Jacobsen is a one-stop-shop supplier providing inspired flooring solutions that are ideal for Kiwi floor spaces from fine architectural homes to contemporary offices, healthcare settings, and unique one-off projects, such as Te Puawānanga, a state-of-the-art educational centre at MOTAT, where Jacobsen contributed high-quality flooring solutions. “We are a trusted flooring advisor in the New Zealand market, working with architects, designers, flooring contractors and leading industry body FloorNZ,” says Cynthia Tang, Jacobsen’s general manager of marketing, technology and impact. “We have some of the best-in-class brands like Tarkett and US-based Shaw Contract, and recently took on another company called Karndean, one of the largest luxury vinyl tile (LVT) companies in the world, based in the UK.” Brands like these have the size and scale to invest strongly in R&D and inspiring design. For example, last year renowned Spanish architect and industrial designer Patricia Urquiola worked with DESSO – within the Tarkett stable – on a new range of contemporary carpet tiles. Another inspiring design collaboration last year was between modern furniture and décor frontrunner West Elm, and Shaw Contract. Like the brands it represents, Jacobsen has strong environmental and ethical standards that ensure it provides the best flooring systems for the environment and the community. Illustrating its community impact, Jacobsen recently gifted all the floor and wall coverings to the Southland Charity Hospital in Invercargill. Flooring Xtra Invercargill generously donated the full installation. “We were proud to have played our part in supporting this important community project that recognises the critical healthcare needs of the region,” Cynthia says. Re.Form, Jacobsen’s dedicated product stewardship programme, puts an emphasis on re-use of flooring before considering recycling and with disposal or landfill as a last resort. Under this programme, flooring off-cuts are collected from flooring contractors, and Jacobsen then sorts the material to ensure it ends up where it needs to be. “It’s not just about carbon offsetting – it’s about seeing flooring as a circular product and providing a closed loop system.” Under the Re:Form programme, Jacobsen donates high-quality, reusable carpet tiles to Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organisation that works with families in need of housing, and partners with suppliers making products designed with the circular economy in mind. Longevity of product goes hand in hand with Jacobsen’s commitment to people and planet. It needs to look great, feel right, function well and last for a long time, so it won’t need to be replaced prematurely. The team works closely with architects to achieve flooring solutions that are perfect for place and purpose, and with trusted installers to ensure that flooring is put in correctly. “If it’s a Green Star building, we can help architects select the flooring to achieve that,” says Cynthia. Visualising how flooring options will look in a room is made easy, thanks to their AI tool, the Jacobsen Room Visualiser, which enables people to preview options at different times of day and under different lighting. Jacobsen keeps a close eye on what’s trending in the world of flooring. Currently, industrial chic is giving way to office spaces that feel homely and warm, with an emphasis on nourishing greens and natural materials.
