| 89 BUILDING iBuild NZ A recent project for iBuild was a brand-new build, right in the bush on a tight site in Maxwell Street, Grey Lynn. a heritage area, so the project needed to keep the home’s character, as is reflected in the treatment of joinery elements in the extension. “We so enjoyed the opportunity to bring this old villa into a new era in its life,” Jared says. “The family are thrilled with what has been achieved.” Jared says the apprenticeship training pathway has changed since the days he became qualified. He sees positives and negatives in the system today, where trainee builders essentially work autonomously through their journey. “When I learnt, it was back in the era of 8000 hours to qualify. These days, the system is designed to allow builders to work at their own pace. If a person is highly motivated and quick to learn skills, they can essentially get through in two years; however, the reality of becoming a complete builder, in my opinion, is a path that takes 10-plus years.” In saying this, Jared acknowledges the reality that there is so much more to becoming a full-rounded builder than simply the practical skills. “You have to learn about managing people, dealing with unforeseen challenges, conflict at times, and these are things that can only be learnt in time. A big part you learn also is how to manage stress in owning a business and you have to develop ways to minimise this by having balance in your life and things in it that aren’t work-related.” HOT WATER SYSTEMS SOLAR HEATED EXPERTS IN PLUMBING DRAIN UNBLOCKING & DRAINLAYING LPG & NATURAL GAS SPOUTING, DOWNPIPES & ROOFING PUMP & TANK MAINTENANCE LOCAL PLUMBING SPECIALISTS SERVICING AUCKLAND AND NORTHLAND Get in touch today! 0508 326 769 www.actionalltrades.co.nz James Joblin leads Action Alltrades, located in Swanson, Auckland, a business oering expertise and experience across gas-fitting, drain-laying, plumbing and roofing.
