Founded by experienced drainlayer Mark Jelicich in 2021, Mako Civil has grown from a one-man operation with a truck and a digger into a fully fledged team tackling major subdivision and drainage projects. The company now employs a close-knit team of eight, delivering high-quality drainage, earthworks, and polyethylene (PE) pipe welding across the region. Mark’s partner Rosie Allen, a former lawyer, has recently come on board as general manager to help streamline operations, drive strategic growth, and establish the work-life balance the couple values. “Mark needs to be on-site full-time, managing projects and client expectations, while I’m focusing on establishing systems to make everything more efficient and sustainable,” she explains. That includes integrating job management software like Fergus to support pricing accuracy and client communication, while also implementing user-friendly processes for health and safety and project tracking. “We’re growing, but we’re committed to staying hands-on and ensuring we never compromise on quality,” Rosie says. Mako Civil has already proven its capabilities on several key subdivision projects, including the 19-lot residential development at the former St Mary’s Hospital site in Onerahi. The site presented multiple challenges, including steep terrain, expansive clay, and contaminated soils, all during a very wet Northland winter. Mako Civil was one of the few contractors to secure a winter works consent from Northland Regional Council, and delivered the earthworks nine weeks ahead of schedule. The project included significant technical earthworks, erosion and sediment control, retaining structures, and stormwater and wastewater reticulation. “We managed the full civil works package under NZS3910 conditions, coordinated with subcontractors, iwi and council, and saw it through on time and under budget,” Rosie says. Mako Civil has a strong foundation in residential, commercial and subdivision works. Already approved as a high-risk council contractor for sewer and stormwater, the company has recently been added to WDC water list. Mako Civil offers a full suite of civil construction services across drainage, earthworks, and PE welding. The company is certified in butt welding and electrofusion welding, with the capability to weld pipes from 40mm to 615mm. This specialisation adds value for clients across subdivision and infrastructure projects, as Mako Civil can do it all.
